I just received my Drobo Mini along with 4 Samsung EVO 750GB drives, each capable of write/reads of over 500MB/s. I got everything setup using the included ThunderBolt cable and the Drobo Mini is barely scoring 225MB/s write and 260-290MB/s read performance using Black Magic Disk Speed Test. Now, for those that are saying that it's a RAID device and that RAID is not about the speed, boo hoo, etc. Here is the real world truth. Yes, RAID is not first and foremost about the speed, however, I also have a Pegasus R6 with 6 2TB HDDs each capable of performing at around 100MB/s write/read speeds. This R6 in a RAID 5 configuration registers over 460MB/s write and 480MB/s read performance using the same test. So, RAID should certainly aggregate some of the performance of the component drives. Sure you lose some of it, but it at least multiplies upwards. The Drobo on the other hand is actually reducing the performance down to half the speed of just one of the component drives! Now that is unexpected and unacceptable.

I've submitted a ticket with Drobo Technical support. I'll update this review once I hear back from them. In the meantime, I'm going to have to research another solution to get faster speeds.

Update: I've added a image containing some screenshots comparing the performance of the Drobo Mini against my internal Samsung EVO 1TB SSD and my Promise Pegasus R6.

Update: I received a call from Drobo technical support rep on 4/14 requesting my concerns and performance data. I submitted that information to them and was given a prompt reply (less than 2 hours later) informing me that the Drobo is not designed solely around performance. He mentioned that the Drobo mini uses software RAID and implied that hardware RAID based systems will out perform it.

I WISH I COULD RATE ZERO STARS!

Revised after 18 months: The Mini failed and the sent a RMA's replacement about a month later. THAT replacement failed in less than a year... BUT after two weeks waiting on tech support, they refused to replace the replacement because "it is their policy" .

RUN AS FAST AS YOU CAN FRO DROBO...

BTW... I run a DATA CENTER and am not a novice. MCSE, CCNA, CCNP, VCP-DCV.

I bought one, added a short of two thousand dollars of Samsung 840EVO SSDs and the base failed.

Calling tech support was easy, getting results sucked. They have a call center that starts you off with Tier One for idiots. As expected, they made sure it was not a user problems and sent it up to Tier Two: for smarter idiots. Tier two recovered all the same stuff, which took another week, so I ordered another, replaced it and sent the bad one back and that solved the problem. Then tier 3 called back and said they were going to trouble shoot some more and I said I fixed it my swapping.... which is what I asked tier 1 to do 10 days earlier.

The unit actually work good (except it won't boot for MacMavericks on the Thunderbolt, so I have it booting on the USB.

Ok I thought I was good to go, so I ordered another DroboMini and another $2K of SSDs and set it up as a clone.

Then that box failed and I am in the middle of another 10 days of tech support slowness and since I have had the device since May 2014, my return options are gone and I have to wait for Drobo to finally decide to replace the Mini chassis.

Tech support for Drobo even asked me to go out an spend another $2,000.00 on drives so they could make sure it was not their $300 box.

First of all, I did a very complete review of the Mini on my blog here:
OneMansBlog.com/drobomini
Here's the summary:

PROS:
1) It's about 7" x 7" x 2" and weighs about 4 pounds fully loaded with drives. That makes it the smallest RAID enabled drive you can get. Get the Drobo case for it too. You'll want to protect it when you travel.

2) It's got both Thunderbolt and USB 3 connectivity. Thunderbolt is a must for moving huge files, and I achieve around 150MBps+ consistently with this drive.

3) The drive is quiet, and runs cool. I tested it with large data transfers for nearly 2 hours and the surface temp was the same as a single drive external disk.

4) It is extremely secure, because you can run it in dual disk redundancy mode. That way if 2 drives fail, your data is still safe. Very good for traveling.

5) It is easy enough for my mother to set up and use. Literally.

CONS:
1) It is expensive. You're going to spend around $1k on the Mini plus drives. You could get a 2TB portable drive for a fraction of this, although its a riskier proposition if a drive fails. Depends on what your data is literally worth. For professionals who are getting paid and cant replace data lost, this is a no brainer. For personal use that isn't that critical, probably not your best choice.

2) It requires power. You can't just run it off your laptop. So if you're traveling with it you need to either be near a plug, or take an external battery with a 110 outlet (I've used the Paul C. Buff Vagabond Mini successfully - paulcbuff.com/vm120.php

3) It's not as fast as a drive that uses full size 3.5" disks. I wouldn't recommend the Mini for use with a desktop machine.
