I love the Droll Yankees company because of the superior construction of their products and their no questions asked guarantees. Unfortunately this feeder has lots of problems. I sold it at my store in the hopes that only small birds could fly under the baffle and larger birds wouldn't be able to use it. (We have an extraordinary number of white-winged doves in our area who turn into real feeder hogs.) It did work for that reason. The small birds could fly in under the baffle and feed and the doves never figured it out. They just hung on top and pooped all over the baffle and so it needed to be cleaned constantly. That aside, the really big problems with this feeder were that the small birds, although they could fly under the baffle and eat, would sit in the seed area and also poop while they ate. NOT GOOD for birds' health so it required lots of going through the seed to get poop out. On top of that, the seed shifts around as the birds eat, so the thing was always lopsided and lots of seed spilled out the bottom as well. Finally, it was a disaster in the wind. The bottom seed holder swings around wildly in the wind. I finally quit selling it in my store.

I used this feeder for more than a dozen years before moving to an area where I could no longer use it. It never gave me a problem, except that in our Pacific Northwest climate you do have to clean it every couple of months or so to keep the seeds from clogging at the distribution point in the bowl. At that point here in the Seattle area, the seeds can get damp and cling together and rot. This is where the seeds flow down to the individual ports where birds must perch on the outside, and below the bowl, in order to feed. In my area, the only birds able to do that are the various finches, pine siskens and chickadees. House sparrows couldn't do it and that is one of the advantages of the feeder. The other advantage is that squirrels are unable to get the seeds. To avoid the problem of birds flying up into the seed hopper that another reviewer had is to simply lower the dome - it's adjustable up and down. I was able to lower it far enough so that birds couldn't fly into the seed hopper, but they could still fly up and perch on the feed ports. Wind was never a problem for me.

It's just a great feeder and should I get to an area where I can have feeders, I will buy one of these again.

I have five types of feeders in my yard. This is the least popular, both for the birds and for me. Designed to accommodate both perching and clinging birds, it's uncomfortable for both. Perching birds -- those that figure out how to do it -- get into the bowl, "bathe" in the seeds, and leave behind unwelcome calling cards. Clinging birds have trouble gaining purchase on the holes provided. They'll grab a seed or two and head off for a "restaurant" with better service. I like many Droll Yankee products, but how this one made it to market baffles me.

This is the oddest bird feeder, but I would purchase it again. I have read most of the reviews and agree with them, even the negative ones.

I only use (hulled) sunflower hearts in this feeder, although it is quite suitable for other feed. Here's my 2 cents:

PROS
1) Solved my problem with my 6 ravenous mourning doves. They were devouring about 3 lbs a day of sunflower hearts in my platform feeder (my mistake to use a platform feeder). My goal was to find a feeder where I could still offer sunflower hearts for the smaller birds (mostly house sparrows and a few house finches this time of year). I didn't want to buy another hopper feeder. This feeder, with the domed top lowered low enough - about to the top of the top hanging "ring," makes the opening is too small for the crafty doves that still try to get into it on occasion. (They initially banged on it, trying to get in.)

2) There was a learning curve where the smaller birds had to learn how to get in under the dome because I had placed it so low, but they finally figured it out. I also have sparrows and finches that feed from the holes on the bottom green sides. Unlike the reviewer who lamented that the non-clinging birds could only get one seed at a time, my birds seem to make a game out of it when they can get into the bowl just as easily.

3) There are almost always 1-3 small birds in the bowl.

CONS
1) It is true that the birds leave small messes in the bowl. But I don't find this problematic as I pick them out every morning and there aren't many. Perhaps that's because the birds rotate in and out of the bowl pretty quickly.

I purchased two of these Droll Yankee Big Top feeders to replace 2 identical very old ones that I have been using for years. We feed birds year-round because we love watching all the different birds that come to our feeders and because wild birds need the support. This feeder has an adjustable dome that can be raised and lowered to let you determine what size birds will be admitted to the bowl where the seed is located. Spring in PA brings Red-breasted Grosebeaks to this feeder, a real treat for me but it is popular in every season to a wide group of different birds. Some love to cling on the bottom and grab a seed before flying off while others like Cardinals like to camp out in the bowl. The large dome protects both birds and seed from rain and snow. There is a strong hook at the top for hanging and one on the bottom where you could hang a suet cake holder. The feeder is very high quality and is very easy to clean. I love it and recommend it!
