From the manufacturer
Friends Peter Kilham and Alan Bemis started Droll Yankees as a record label in 1960. Peter, an engineer, artist, and inventor, was also an avid backyard birder. In 1969, he invented the first commercial bird feeder, which continues to be a best seller.
An American company, Droll Yankees sources the majority of its components from domestic manufacturers.
Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder
The Droll Yankees Yankee Flipper is a motorized bird feeder that allows birds to eat while preventing squirrels from getting a meal. When a squirrel hops onto the feeder's perch ring, the ring begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip.
The 17-inch seed tube holds 5 pounds of birdseed for fewer refills, and it has four seed ports for accommodating multiple birds. The tube feeder hangs by its stainless steel looped wire that reduces motion to prevent seed spill.
- 17-inch tube holds up to 5 pounds of birdseed
- Internal baffle disperses seed evenly to all 4 ports
- Motorized perch ring spins when triggered by the weight of a squirrel
- UV-stabilized seed tube won't discolor over time
- Stainless steel hanging wire reduces motion to prevent seed spill
- Measures 8.3 x 8.3 x 29 inches
The Yankee Flipper features a perch ring that encourages birds to eat but prevents squirrels from feeding. The ring supports the weight of birds--even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals--but not squirrels. The weight of a squirrel triggers a motor that causes the perch to spin and the squirrel to lose its grip. To further repel squirrels, the feeder tube is designed to be too wide and long for them to cling to. Also, the heavy, snug-fitting metal cap cannot be lifted by squirrels, so they cannot reach seed inside the feeder.
The Yankee Flipper can hold up to 5 pounds of birdseed, which means you don’t need to make frequent refills. An internal baffle keeps seed flowing to all four ports, and a large feeder perch allows multiple birds to feed simultaneously. The clear tube helps you keep track of seed levels.
The Yankee Flipper Bird Feeder is designed for years of use. The durable seed tube is made from UV-stabilized polycarbonate that will not discolor over time, and the feeder's metal components are powder coated in a lovely forest green that will resist chipping and fading. The Flipper is backed by the Droll Yankees Lifetime Warranty against squirrel damage and a one-year limited warranty on electronics.
A variety of birds use the Yankee Flipper, including cardinals, chickadees, finches, flickers, goldfinches, grackles, grosbeaks, jays, juncos, kinglets, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, starlings, titmice, towhees, woodpeckers, and wrens. The Flipper works with mixed seed, peanut chunks, safflower seed, sunflower kernels, and cracked corn, though it works best with sunflower seeds, a favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird.
Made in the USA

Make a World of Difference
The act of hanging a bird feeder and keeping it clean and full can improve the chances that birds and their offspring will survive. Homes with bird feeders attract more birds and contribute to sustaining the local ecosystem. By building quality feeders and offering feeder replacement parts, Droll Yankees strives to keep its feeders in yard and out of landfills.

A favorite of almost every backyard feeder bird. They have easy to crack, thin shells and can be offered in a wide variety of feeder types, like platform, tube, and hopper feeders. These seeds also have a high fat content that is perfect for giving birds energy all year long, especially in winter.
This Yankee Flipper squirrel-proof feeder is the ultimate feeder for keeping your feathered friends fed, and the furred fiends hungry. Let's talk about the basics first. The sturdy polycarbonate feeding chamber is a whopping 4-3/4 inches in diameter and 21 inches long, giving you a break between refills--and ensuring that squirrels can't hang down from the top to reach seed. The four feeding chambers are easily accessible via the perch ring, and the interior of the chamber is designed to direct seed into the seed ports.
Now, for the fun stuff: The birdfeeder features an encased motor and rechargeable (and replaceable) batteries. When you receive the feeder, simply charge the batteries overnight, hang the feeder from its looped bail wire, and prepare to be amazed (and entertained!). The motor is connected to the weight activated perch ring--birds will not set it off, even larger species like woodpeckers and cardinals. But the minute a squirrel hops onto the perch, the motor is triggered and the feeder begins spinning, taking the squirrel for a whirl before it loses its grip and is thrown (gently) from the perch. It's a humanitarian way to deal with persistent squirrels--there are no shocks or poisons to hurt them, simply a wild ride that they won't be inclined to repeat. Birds are free to eat without disruption, and your family will get a kick out of watching squirrels go for their rides. There's a lifetime warranty on the feeder body and a one-year warranty on the motor and battery charger. --Ariel Meadow Stallings

However, the power stick is another story:
The first charge lasted 8 months. Wow!
The second charge lasted 6.5 months. Great!
The THIRD charge lasted 2weeks. Huh?
The FOURTH charge lasted a week. ???
The electronics warrantee of course is only a year. All that savings? Will be eaten up pretty soon by a new battery, which is minimally $40.
I'm also curious why Droll Yankee uses NiCad cells. That's so late 1990s, with the attendant problems of charging, "charge memory," cell reconditioning, and useful life. There's also no charge light to indicate "full charge" or "discharged" -- a strange omission on such a relatively expensive device.
The product is in desperate need of redesign. Lithium cells would be a good start. A more secure base is mandated. If the issue is preventing motor burnout when the ring is grabbed by raccoons, then a high-torque shut off is an easy addition.
In all, the present incarnation is nowhere near as good as the original. I would have returned it, but Amazon tracking showed it as "never delivered," with no way to correct the error.
Oh, . . . I've no idea what the "suction power" rating is, so I'm being charitable as this gismo in't a vacuum cleaner.
I am sorry to give this feeder a bad review, BUT, the squirrels can still get the bird seed. We were so excited to get this feeder for my husband for Father's Day. However, we've tried several different places to hang it and the squirrels still manage to eat the bird seed. It's quite comical though, they have learned to put one paw in one of the holes and then the other paw in another hole where the feed comes out, hang on and come on boys let's have a feast! We are so sad. If we still had the box I would send it back. Sorry no great expectations for this feeder!

still waiting on the squirrels to get some.
NI CAD batteris. Considering price point. COME ON guys. get some lithium ion batteries and a light LED to tell you when its done charging on adapter. Time to modernise this thing.
look at a NAPA trouble light"93362-Li". as example. LED indicator and automatic cut off when done charging. lasta way longer than ni cad.
Who runs ni cad anymore.
Good quality though otherwise. I am scared to open lid because the side plastic is so thin at the drilled holes. I hope it does not crack due to its spring loaded upper stainless strong hanger.
i might weld on a second larger ring. If bird is too heavy though the bird would be flung off too i guess. lol,
