Product Description

Attract Hummingbirds where you can easily see them with the Droll Yankees Little Flyer 4 Hummingbird Feeder. This item is an updated version of Droll Yankees' best selling Hummingbird feeder, the LF. Four feeding ports enable you to view Hummingbirds from any angle and holds 10 ounces of nectar. For added security, Nectar Guard Tips are included to virtually eliminate contamination from bees and flying insects. The central ant moat can be filled with water to prevent ants from reaching the nectar. The four small perches allow Hummingbirds a place to linger and rest, making them easier to observe. The ruby red top attracts Hummingbirds and has molded plastic flowers for cleaner, easier use. Cleaning and refilling is a cinch. Just remove the brass rod and lift the cap off. Dishwasher safe on the top shelf. The UV Stabilized Acrylic construction will last for several seasons. BPA Free and safe for Hummers. Use the included Perfect Little Brushes to keep the flower ports clean. This feeder may be hung from the included brass rod, or pole mounted using a threaded adapter that comes with our Garden Pole - not included. The nectar recipe is engraved directly onto the feeder cover. Nectar is a simple mix of table sugar and water which can easily be made at home. Leak-Proof design is a Droll Yankees guarantee. Lifetime Warranty covers defective parts. Made in the U.S.A. Note - Nectar is easily made by boiling 4 parts water and 1 part table sugar and will keep in the refrigerator up to two weeks. I own a glass feeder, and a highly-recommended polycarbonate feeder that has very similar design to this one. I do take into consideration of keeping hummingbird feeders free of BPA, so it was necessary to replace the other polycarbonate one. Droll Yankees' seems to attract hummers rather quickly. I believe it's due to its red, doom shape top that makes it easier for hummers to spot it from different angles. However, I noticed that smaller hummers (Allen's, Costa's, Black-chinned) can't reach the feeding holes, so instead of saving energy by perching, they have to hoover and put their entire beaks in the holes to be able to drink from it.

We have used a Droll Yankees model LE for years and our local Anna's hummingbirds love it. The feeder was looking old and tired when we saw a description of the model LF-4. Wanting the best for our little friends we bought the LF-4. Our hummingbirds tried feeding at the LF-4 for a couple of days and then they gave up. We noticed that the ergonomics were all wrong; the adult birds could only reach the feeding holes (while sitting on the perch) by stretching and arching their necks. We cleaned up the old model LE and put it back in service. Before long our friends returned, so all is well. We sent back the disappointing LF-4.

I really do not want to give a mediocre review on a product made by Droll Yankees, a USA company that makes products in Connecticut. I truly hate to do this. Perhaps if I did not already have the inverted bottle type hummer feeder out, my hummers would have taken more of a shine to it.

I have little gangsta hummers that defend and fight over the feeder. It seemed to me they spend more time dive bombing each other and wearing themselves out than feeding, so I introduced this new one to the backyard in an effort to make peace. They would defend this new one, but not feed from it. In an effort to "train" my little gangstas, when it was time to clean the feeders I did not return the suspended bottle to its area and hung the Little Flyer there instead. Hummingbird activity in my yard decreased by approximately 70%. When lone hummers did come to feed, they would take a sip or two while hovering with no place to land, then visit the hummingbird plants instead.

One day while sitting out there, one of my little gangstas came to it, took a brief feeding, noticed me sitting outside and literally dive bombed me! "You did this!" she seemed to be saying. Whew! Now I have both the old inverted bottle feeder and this one hanging on opposite sides of the garden. I began seeing more hummer activity immediately. They prefer the bottle but occasionally one will take a sip from the Little Flyer.

Other reviewers have outlined design flaws and I concur with their opinions. It is too deep and it needs to be kept filled to the brim for hummers to gain access to the nectar. It is very hard to pry the top off for cleaning and filling without breaking it. And as the hummers have "told" me, and demonstrated, the perches are useless. I'm sorry, Droll Yankees, to leave mediocre feedback on one of your products, and I hope you can use it constructively for future products.

Not a single bird came to my new feeder in the week I had it up (our feeder has been very active for 10+ yrs). This was both disappointing and curious to me so I took it down and I'm going back to the old one, also a Droll Yankees. I cleaned the new one and prepared to box it up and send it back when I noticed that the hanging rod screwed to the base of the feeder inside the ant mote (the old one did not). When I detached the rod I noticed that it screwed into a knurled nut that was pressed into the plastic mold. On that nut I noticed dark spots. I'm not at all sure what they are ( I can only speculate so I won't). The point is, that nut is inaccessible for cleaning and highly susceptible to mold where it is exposed to the elements. Perhaps you could soak the entire base in bleach for cleaning but that's not for me.

I'm going to put the old one back up and enjoy the birds again.

I bought this feeder because we were having a problem with Japanese hornets. And I know and trust the quality of Droll Yankees feeders. The hornets went away after a couple of days & the hummers returned. They spend more time at this feeder than others I have tried, so I'm assuming that this one is their preference. Very easy to clean & assemble. I have to give it 4 stars because the perches seem a tad too distant from the hole for the smaller male hummers & they refuse to perch to drink. The larger females do not have a problem & will sit for long periods, drinking & resting.

I bought several of these because the plastic is BPA-free. As soon as I replaced a couple of my aging feeders with the Little Flyers, I noticed that the hummers were not perching, but just hovering to feed. They were trying to perch and feed, but the angle of the feeder holes made it very difficult for them (all we have at this time are the smaller Anna's hummingbirds). I know the birds don't have to perch, but part of the fun of having feeders is to be able to watch the birds closely. So I modified the holes, hoping to make it easier for them and, bingo!, they immediately were able to perch and feed. If you read this, Droll Yankees, I hope you'll agree that your design has a teeny flaw.
