Product Description

The Droll Yankees New Generation Tube Birdfeeder features a green base and cap. The classic tube bird feeder holds up to 1 pound of Nyjer seed or premium mixed or sunflower seed, so you don't need to make frequent refills, and it has 4 ports, so multiple birds can feed at once. Simply slide the cap up the hanger for quick and convenient filling. An internal seed baffle will direct bird seed to the lowest level to ensure the feeder empties completely, preventing seed buildup. The tube feeder is durably designed with a UV-stabilized polycarbonate seed tube that won't discolor, and a die-cast metal base and cap to withstand all weather conditions. Grackle-proof too... so far

So far it's been solving my grackle and red-wing blackbird problem. They're simply too big to get through the cage and empty the feeder, and let me tell you, were they ever mad about it. One got on my safflower seed feeder and started tossing the safflower seed onto the ground after a failed assault on the cage feeder. Another would get on top of the shepherd's hook holding the cage feeder and voice his frustration. Things have calmed down, and while the grackles can empty my Aspects tube feeder of its sunflower seeds, once that is empty, they're out of luck until I refill it. The little birds - chickadees, goldfinches, house finches, white-breasted nuthatches, chipping sparrows, and downy woodpeckers - can finally get a bite to eat while the grackles have to settle for fallen seeds. My red-bellied woodpeckers can even stretch their heads through and get some seeds, but the grackles have had no such luck. I've not many squirrels, and those I have (American red and chipmunks) have left it alone, so I can't attest to whether or not it will thwart squirrels. I would assume it would stop large grey squirrels, but not the red squirrels or chipmunks. Cardinals, grosbeaks, the larger sparrows, mourning doves and hairy woodpeckers can't use it either, so I put out some safflower and suet (had to rig up a grackle-proof suet feeder) for them, as my grackles don't like safflower (so far). Overall this feeder seems well made. It's heavy, so make sure you've got a sturdy support for it. The baffle has been beautifully keeping out water, and the feeder lid fits snugly. You can remove the tube for cleaning by removing a screw on the base, but the bottom of the feeder tube is not detachable without unscrewing the bottom two feeder ports. Some other cage feeders have a more narrow cage, so the grackles can snake their heads in and still feast to their heart's content. This cage appears to be wide enough to stop that behaviour. It's a pricey feeder, but feeding the ravenous grackles, red-wing blackbirds and squirrels will put more of a dent in your wallet over time, so I'd consider it well worth the price.

Excellent feeder for smaller birds

Update: We liked it so well that we ordered a 2nd one.

I would most definitely recommend this feeder for smaller birds. My opinion is that it is well worth the money - though I would have been more pleased had it been a little less costly - and larger than expected (which has proved to be a good thing). The clear cover is thick and sturdy and a great addition for keeping the birds/seed dry, and the green seed-cover lid is connected on the hanging-loop and is weighted giving the feeder a sound feel and making it easy to fill without losing/dropping the lid. Like a lot of 'birders', we had squirrel issues and have yet to see a squirrel hanging on it. Now having said that, the squirrels may have tried to jump on the cage shaking seed out of it but I haven't personally witnessed it. I do know that we are saving money on seed by not having the squirrels wasting a lot of it, as well as the blue jays and cardinals not being able to kick/knock out the seed. (We have a separate open-tray feeder for them which the squirrels will invade - but it's just the one feeder). I had ordered another caged feeder at the same time that I ordered the Droll Yankee SDC Green Wild Bird Feeder with Domed Cage - for about half the price - to compare the two but in my judgement the Droll is definitely worth the purchase, again wishing it were a little less costly. [Mixed Seed Globe Cage Feeder sold by Gardners Supply Co - gave it a rating of 4 - I do like it as well but have some dislikes, i.e. the tray at the bottom holds moisture, seeds/dust collect in base of tube below the feeding hole making it hard to clean; and, wasn't sure how big or how much of the lid/top would protect from rain (which is not much so had to provide my own rain cover - but my own oversight when ordering.]

This is absolutely the best bird feeder I have ever bought! Over the years, I probably have purchased over a dozen different bird feeders, all claiming to keep out squirrels. NONE of them worked. Squirrels are very smart, and it doesn't take a very hungry squirrel to figure out how to get to that seed. When a squirrel jumps on this feeder, it can't get to the seed. They reach in with their arms, then their head, but they can't get through the outside cage. It is quite fun to watch them go on top, to the sides, to the bottom, back to the sides, trying to figure out how to get to the seed. The feeder is so big that they can't tip it to the side, either. Frustrated, they eventually leave. The plastic top protects the seed from getting wet when it rains. All kind of smaller birds from sparrows to cardinals can go through the cage, and get to the seed. The birds seem to really like to come to this feeder too - I will see 6 or 7 at one time in there at times. Some birds go in and just sit for a while, eating occasionally - pretty funny.

I know this feeder is a little pricy (I thought about it for a couple of days before buying it), but it comes with a lifetime warranty. I have never bought a bird feeder before that had a lifetime warranty. The cap on top of the feeder is made of heavy gauge steel, so squirrels can't chew their way to the seed. I highly recommend this feeder.

I bought this in an attempt to keep the bully birds away from the songbirds. In that capacity I can't believe how well it has worked. Combined with an upside down suet feeder I've seen a dramatic decrease in the amount of black birds and jays at the feeders. And when they are there they are picking off the ground and I'm OK with that. I've been happy with every Droll product I've purchased. I especially like the six feeding ports but may buy another because of how many birds I have visiting.

The neighbourhood birds love the food supply, however, they do seem to find it difficult to balance on the plastic. Their fix for that is to knock the seed to the ground and eat from there.

Pros: It is easy to fill and has an adjustment to control how much food comes out at a time
Cons: The big birds took over this feeder, so I got a caged one so the smaller birds could safely eat too
