There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Setup was seamless and took less than a minute. I’ve only used it once so far, but that’s enough to get a gauge on its performance. I selected a simple cookie recipe with few ingredients and followed the directions, pouring ingredients into the bowl until the correct weight registered on the scale. I had to giggle the first couple of times the big checkbox popped up, letting me know that I’d poured in just the right amount of sugar or cocoa (because I’m a geek).
I do plan to try adding some of my own recipes in the future.
As a food scale the device works as expected, we just wished there was some kind of display on the scale versus having to be dependent on a smart phone or tablet to see measurements. We were surprised at how well the scale works in conjunction with the recipes provided in the app. We really enjoyed making pizza dough from scratch. We also have enjoyed trying the different recipes and wish there were more!
Drop recently started allowing people to submit their own recipes so we are hoping more recipes will continue to flow.

To criticise the ‘Drop’ for requiring an App would be to ignore the main reason for its existence – the App is the Drop, the Drop is the App. Joining the online Drop community is easy and it is a type of Pinterest for cooking. You choose a recipe you like, you can then send ingredients to a shopping list. Once you have what is needed you can prep; this is when the scale and the app combine – a container onscreen fills and empties as you add or remove the ingredient. This is simple, but interactive fun. The recipes themselves have other interactive elements such as images to help or tips on what to do. With loads of yummy recipes already on the App you can leave reviews on how you found the recipe and the result.
If you are old school, you can switch the App to simply read as a scale – resetting the weight is simple and it is very accurate. Personally, as a gadget fan I love the idea of a scale that links to a virtual recipe book, but I am also very aware of the limited lifespan of technology. My mother still uses the same weight based scales to measure that have worked for over 30 years +. Can the same be said of the ‘Drop’? Once you IPad falters or the company flounders, you are left with an attractive lump of nothing. The secret is to give this to someone who is enthusiastic about tech and baking – they will use it loads over the next few years, making it worth buying. For the cooking toe dipper, this is perhaps not for you, although it has inspired me to do a little more baking.
In use the device is very simple. Pull out the tab to activate the battery (which has a claimed life of a year or so), switch bluetooth on on your IOS device and start the app. It connected automatically within a couple of seconds. You are then ready to go.
The app is intuitive and easy to navigate. It starts on a page of highlighted recipes, but you can select cocktails or categories and so on. Choose a recipe and it will show you what ingredients you need and then when you are ready to go you just tap the screen and follow the instructions. It tells you when to pre heat the oven, or how to prepare the ingredients prior to the recipe. You can even select portion size. Many of the ingredients allow for substitution and it will recommend suitable alternatives. Once you have completed a recipe you can write a review, and it is easy to read the reviews of others along with their tips and tricks. It is super easy and highly effective. There is a large selection of recipes to choose from or search through from a variety of renowned sources. And you can change units from centigrade to farenheit or pounds to kilos.
I would have liked the app to be available on Android, but that is apparently coming soon. And I would also have liked to be able to submit my own recipes, which again is a feature which appears to be in beta testing and may well become available in the future.
Overall then, this is so much more than just a kitchen scale. It engages you much more and allows for a much greater flexibility when preparing and cooking a very large variety of foods. The whole family have used it, from the total novice right up to the enthusiastic amateur chef, and we all unanimously love it. It is the future of baking and will only get better as the app is developed.
