Just recently bought this Dutch processed cocoa after seeing it on America's Test Kitchen taste test. It was excellent. I used first off to make brownies and they were so rich and decadent! Then I used to make a double chocolate chip cookie recipe and they were moist and chewy in texture and remained that way from the first to the last that was eaten several days later. Then lastly I made the best chocolate cake with a chocolate buttercream frosting. My husband said the cake was as if baked by a professional! It was really awesome! I think everything tasted so rich and chocolaty because as I understand, Dutch process cocoa has more fat than natural cocoa(Hersheys, Nestle). When I would use natural cocoa, the cakes would be drier and the frosting would be lighter in color. Droste cocoa is the finest cocoa I have ever used in my life. If you want to "wow" folks with your sweet treats this is the cocoa to use! Highly recommend!

DOESN'T COMPARE TO BENSDORP

This Droste cocoa powder is OK, but I much prefer Bensdorp Dutch Cocoa for baking and for hot chocolate. So far, I haven’t found a better cocoa than Bensdorp. Droste tastes mild by comparison to Bensdorp. Bensdorp has a much richer chocolate taste without being bitter. As a side note, the picture of the nun or the nurse or whatever she is on the Droste box, has the most sinister expression on her face. She looks like she’s getting ready to poison someone. Also, Amazon shipped this box of chocolate in a plastic bag, so it arrived crushed, almost flat as a pancake. So from this alone, I had a negative first impression of the product before I even tried it. Very disappointing. I’ll never buy it again.

Best replacement for Peet's cocoa in coffee

I buy cocoa to put in my coffee. I was a fan of the Peet's cocoa, which I can't seem to find anymore. This is very similar, and may actually be the same. I can;t be sure, but Peet's can says their cocoa was shipped from Holland, and this is also made in Holland, and has a very similar appearance, flavor, and nutritional labeling. At any rate, for coffee, it seems best to have Dutch process cocoa, which is less acidic than natural process cocoa (like Hershey's). If you do buy dutch process cocoa to put in a brownie recipe that calls for natural process cocoa, remember you will need to use baking powder instead of baking soda, using twice the amount called for, to make up for the lack of acidity. While this is the closest I have found as a Peet's cocoa alternative, I have also tried the Guittard Cocoa Rouge and Rodelle Gourmet Baking Cocoa, which are also quite good, each having a unique flavor different from the Droste. I look forward to trying the Valrhona next. I did knock one star off because the price on this item seems a bit high compared to what it might be in a store, if I could find it in a store. I did receive the item in the box as pictured. It says 'Cacao' on one side and 'Cocoa' on the other. The liner bag is in there, and attached in a clever way to the folding box top to help prevent spills. Another person got a knock off in a box with no liner, so probably safest to stick with a high rated seller. In my research into cocoa, I founf an excellent article at King Arthur Flour's site, called the A-B-C's of cocoa. I think if I put a link here it will get stripped out, but a quick Google search will turn it up.

It's good, better than Hersheys by a mile, and a throwback to my childhood, when Droste Cocoa Powder was a luxury. However, I discovered the finest French cacao powder here on Amazon (after Trader Joe's stopped carrying their brand, but still available here on Amazon), and it's Valrhona Cacao Powder.
Sometimes the good old days weren't necessarily the best, sometimes in this great age of global internet commerce you can find products we never had back in the day. The good old days is a logical fallacy anyways, sometimes called the fallacy of rose-colored glasses.

REAL CHOCOLATE!

The first I'd heard of this cocoa was about forty, fifty years ago. I was using a "Joy of Cooking" cookbook, the 1943 addition. Well, I FINALLY tried the stuff. I made some brownies via the recipe I always use in the "Family Farmer" cookbook, 4 eggs, 6 oz, chocolate (3/4 cup of Droste), 2 tbsp. vanilla.... I just let them cool for a couple of hours.... It was well worth the wait!! Cocoa usually has an aftertaste. Not bad but .... This didn't and that was only the second great thing. The taste; I rarely give ANYTHING five stars and I had to think long and hard to give it only 4. I'll wait and make some fudge to see. Oh my god, there goes my diet!:-)

I was craving hot chocolate but didn't want to use the old stand-by mixes. Researched some hot cocoa mixes, found a recipe I liked and it recommended Droste. I had never heard of Droste cocoa powder. I took a leap of faith and ordered it on amazon.com. Oh. My. Goodness. This is THE BEST cocoa powder I have ever used. And my hot cocoa craving? More than satisfied! I was blown away at the flavor. I can never go back to the commercial hot cocoa mixes again. Droste costs more than the cocoa powder I am familiar with but it's worth every penny. Looking forward to making a chocolate cake with this!!
