Dashboard Confessional, a.k.a. Chris Carrabba, wrote all these songs in one night in 1998. They were quickly recorded. Considering the first Dashboard LP, Swiss Army Romance, came out in 2000, this is an early yet interesting offering from Chris. There are no backing vocals, no real production tricks, and you can even hear how old the mixing board and microphones are.
Essentially, it's Chris in his most stripped down form: in an emotional frenzy, he wrote 3 songs and put them down in the studio.
Each track is impressive in it's own rights, as are with most of his songs. However... this cd should really be priced around (...) bucks. Not to knock on Chris and saying his music isn't worth the (...) dollars, but for three three minute songs, it's only for a real true fan, only.
So if you want to get a feel for Dashboard confessional, go get either of the first 2 LPs. Once you're addicted, get this one.

Sure, it's short and has only three songs, but it's very good! The songs:
Drowning: I think it's a little weak in vocals, but I still really like it. Fave lyrics: Are you drowning your fears/in a glass of deception?/When everything's hazy/Everything will be OK.
Anyone, Anyone: Good, better vocally than Drowning in my opinion. Good lines: "I can't see how the way that you leave me alone makes us close."
For Justin: A very sweet song: "It's been a year now since you were here now/And I've been trying to heal inside/Dedications of how I placed/And I see your resemblance in my face/And our birthday I said an extra wish for you."
It receives only four songs simply because of it's short lenghth; otherwise it's good.

This EP is pretty good, especially song #3. My biggest problem is that the cd is so very short that it is not worth the money unless you are a big follower of his music like myself. The quality of the songs are a little rough around the edges especially the first song. But not bad for his first solo project. For those of you new to Dashboard, it is just Chris Carrabas(the singer) and his guitar. He evokes such emotions with his amazing voice, that you just about cry right when you hear the songs. This is a classic example of emo/indie rock. This is mostly slower music and would not recommend this to anyone who is just interested in pop or punk but emo punks should enjoy. You may also recognize his voice from a band called Further Seems Forever, an emo/punk band he used to belong to before he went solo. Further Seems Forever's album is also amazing and recommend it to anyone who likes Dashboard. I also recommend any new comers to Dashboard to start with Swiss Army Romance, his first full length album, instead of The Drowning EP.

It's not my favorite dashboard cd, but it's more than worth the money spent, if you're a true dashboard fan. Someone newer to the greatness that is Dashboard Confessional might want to check out Swiss Army Romance either first or as well as The Drowning. The album itself has some very good qualities to it, and the vocals are as sweet as ever. Whether you've been with it from the beginning or you've just heard a song on the radio and you'd like to hear more, I highly recomend buying both this CD and the So impossible EP, both are well worth the cost and compliment each other perfectly.

Chris Carraba is a good songwriter and his songs never feel half baked, but no one would buy this release unless they were a hardcore fan. I paid ten dollars for this EP and it's only 7 minutes worth of music, that's a lot for a little. I'm a fan so it's not as distressing to me, but when I think of an EP, I'm thinking of a recording between 10 and 20 minutes. ... I just wonder why he released this EP with so little material. I know that he wrote these three songs and recorded them in one night, but for the sake of the fans Chris, please include more material in the EP's from now on until the end of your career.

this cd ep is a collection of the first three songs that were written exclusively for dashboard confessional. they were recorded back in 1998, but they are immediately familiar, and could have fit on 'the swiss army romance'.
however, the fact that this cd has only three songs and lasts about seven and a half minutes might deter some folks from buying it, and rightfully so.
i like this cd. 'anyone, anyone' is most definately the standout track. however, i would only recommend this cd if you are a diehard dashboard confessional fan. if you are interested in getting something from this group(?), i recommend first purchasing one of the two full lengths.

I suggest you only get this if you are a true follower. To me these three songs are my favorites. They were what made me love Chris so much. Ever since I first heard them I have been hooked on Dashboard and can't stop listening. If you aren't sure whether you like him or not I'd say that you should get "Places You Have Come to Fear the Most" and then think about spending the $30-$40 on these three magnificent songs.

WTF are you guys thinking... It is rough around the edges BECAUSE it was written and recorded in one night. It is short because it was his FIRST step as a solo artist. He was testing the water so to say. So, when you can write music like he can... then you can be a critic. If you were smarter than a rock, you would have figured this all out by now. My opinion is that this EP is worth the money, and the So Impossible EP is worth even more.
