One of the things I love about cozy mysteries, and a hallmark of the genre, is that the location is basically a character in itself. It's warm and friendly, murders notwithstanding, and someplace you would love to visit or even live. You get a good mental picture of the picturesque downtown, how far away locations are from one another, and you want to go back and "visit" because you love it so much.
This book - no cozy setting. The few locations that are described aren't memorable enough to picture in your mind, and there's no quaint and homey feel anywhere. I would never want to visit these islands and meet the locals or the guests. To be set in such an exotic location and then to be let down so badly....
And then you get the characters. I didn't like a single one, not even the lead. I kept checking myself as I read along, thinking that surely there must be something that makes me care about whether Lexie would solve the crime, but there never was. I just wanted the insanity to be over. Near the close, we learn something that makes Lexie even more of an unreliable narrator than we could possibly have imagined. Who acts like this? These people aren't in high school or college. There's no excuse for the careless or vindictive ways they treat one another and I confess I don't see how other reviewers see any of this as realistic.
I don't want to spend more time with any of these people. I only finished reading this one because I unfortunately purchased it in print, and now have to figure out what I'm going to do with it since I have no plans to keep it. I don't care enough about the locale to want to "visit." I have no plans to read a sequel. There are plenty of GREAT cozies out there. Find one of those and leave this one on the shelf.
