About the author

Michael Joseph Ferguson is an author, ADHD life coach, public speaker, workshop facilitator, and host of the popular ADHD podcast “Adult ADHD ADD Tips and Support.” Author of the bestselling books The Drummer and the Great Mountain – a Guidebook to Transforming Adult ADD/ADHD and ADHD Time Management, Michael is a leading voice in reframing ADHD as a “neurological type” and not a disorder. He has coined the term “hunter-type” as an alternate label for ADHD, combining Thom Hartmann’s hunter-farmer hypothesis with the expression “neurological type.”
Through podcasts, online workshops, and one-on-one coaching, Michael and his partner Questa Li have built a global community based on their holistic approach to Adult ADHD.

This book is an honest attempt to help those looking for it.
I found it to be very helpful. It seemed as if I was reading my autobiography and I didn’t want to stop learning about myself. Being in my late 50s, I wish I had known these things years ago.
The author suggests A.D.D. is one of several “normal” personalities, and once one is aware of the traits, they can learn function well, without trying to “fix” it.
Example: if one is born of a particular nationality, that is not something one can change or “fix”.

This text is written by an author with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). His book is laid out to discuss what ADHD is and how it can be managed effectively without drugs. It's a must read! The podcasts are also excellent. Get a copy, you won't be disappointed.
However, as an exhausted, overwhelmed ADHDer waiting for medication, I literally do not have the energy or motivation to read this book. I am struggling hard enough to do the basics, without reading a massive book and transforming every aspect of how I do life.
A quick flick through suggests it is packed full of useful information, but it is absolutely enormous, highly detailed, very prescriptive and suggesting you do everything in your life in (probably) a completely different way.
I hope I will reach the stage where I feel able to start making use of what is suggested - I am sure anybody (ADHD or not) would feel a million times better if they transformed their diet, fitness, organisation, communication skills, social life, careers , future visioning etc etc.
I also noticed on flicking through that there seem the usual recommendations and assumptions about having friends and family all around you, to help and motivate you. Not everyone is in this position, especially considering that lots of ADHDers are also *autistic*, and therefore not generally extroverts with large social networks.
I have given three stars as this is the best compromise I can come up with between personally finding the book completely unreadable, and acknowledging that it seems to be full of useful advice, if you are able to read it and do what it says.
I use the strategies outlined in the book on a daily basis and it's been life changing. The book can be read cover to cover or just dipped in and out of for specific areas.
I use the book, have been part of one of the group coaching courses and now have 1:1 coaching with the author Michael. He knows his stuff through real life experience and that's why his advice works so well. Highly recommended!
