Both of our children and our granddaughter loved this book so much, I just purchased another copy for our grandson. The illustrations are magnificent, and the story (which reads like a poem) is fun to share.

I first bought this for my son almost 40 years ago! This was the third I’ve purchased as I bought a second one for my son to keep at his house for his children and this purchase was for my daughter’s first child. It’s a wonderful poem in book form and fun to read to littles up to the end of grammar school.

Bought this for as a gift for a family with a 4 year old girl. I was looking for a book written for when I was born! This book didn't quite match my birth year, but I thought it looked better than the Caldecott winner from my birth year. It seems like it held up pretty well. It's a book regularly chosen by the little girl. The book just has a great flow to the words. It's not an old family favorite, but it's just another children's book that fits right in with the other newer popular book choices (like the Day the Crayon's Quit or Book with No Pictures). I chose it because it was a Caldecott winner, but it seems to hold up on it's own merit against popular modern children's books. It's still memorable and a fun read/listen.

My daughters all loved, LOVED this book and now my five grandsons love rocking to its beat. And truths. While it seems like a "war book", it is thoughtful and I love the peaceful ending.

I got this for my grandson 20mos. because I remember it when it came out! The school librarian read it to my class, first or second grade and I loved it. I’m 61 and this memory is so vivid. My grand enjoyed it too!

I bought this book for my angel boy's second birthday. I will love reading it to him every time I visit my daughter's. And I'm sure that after he's heard it a few times, he will have it memorized!

I got this from my neighbor who was mother of 4 and grandmother of 10 when I had my first child. All my kids loved the repetitive rhyme because it added to the familiarity and anticipation of the grand finale, which I always read really dramatically while shaking my head and making my lips and cheeks add to the KA-BLOOOOM!! Then the birds, flowers, and nests in the cannon makes it feel un-war-like. The illustrations are bright and recognizable for little eyes. Now I have a 9 month old grandson who eagerly waits for the KA-BLOOOOM at the end.

My favorite book from childhood is now my toddler's favorite. Just turned two-years-old and the simple phrases and catchy repetition is helping him memorize as well as spell. The illustrations won an award back in 1968 and deservedly so. Eye candy.

As a small child, I was entranced by the artwork and the rhyming simplicity of this book. Finally I have a copy of my own - not the dog - eared library copy from over thirty years ago.

And I have to admit that this still charms me.
