Book Description

August 7, 2001 Outlander (Book 4)
In this breathtaking novel—rich in history and adventure—The New York Times bestselling author Diana Gabaldon continues the story of Claire Randall and Jamie Fraser that began with the now-classic novel Outlander and continued in Dragonfly in Amber and Voyager. Once again spanning continents and centuries, Diana Gabaldon has created a work of sheer passion and brilliance....

It began at an ancient Scottish stone circle. There, a doorway, open to a select few, leads into the past—or the grave. Dr. Claire Randall survived the extraordinary passage, not once but twice.

Her first trip swept her into the arms of Jamie Fraser, an eighteenth-century Scot whose love for her became a legend—a tale of tragic passion that ended with her return to the present to bear his child. Her second journey, two decades later, brought them together again in the American colonies. But Claire had left someone behind in the twentieth century—their daughter, Brianna....

Now Brianna has made a disturbing discovery that sends her to the circle of stones and a terrifying leap into the unknown. In search of her mother and the father she has never met, she is risking her own future to try to change history ... and to save their lives. But as Brianna plunges into an uncharted wilderness, a heartbreaking encounter may strand her forever in the past ... or root her in the place she should be, where her heart and soul belong....

Editorial Reviews Review

Set in pre-Revolutionary War America, readers finally have the much awaited fourth book in what will probably become a six book series (The Outlander series). The talented Diana Gabaldon continues Claire and Jamie's romantic love affair, and introduces Brianna and Roger's story. Eight hundred pages, and several wonderful new characters later, we wonder why we were waiting for a conclusion. It'll be a long wait for book five, so I recommend you go back and reread Outlander, Dragonfly in Amber, and Voyager to keep yourself sane. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

From Publishers Weekly

Gabaldon has few rivals in writing exciting?and hefty?historical romances. The fourth in a series of linked sagas (Outlander; Dragonfly in Amber; Voyager), her new epic has a delicious premise. Claire Randall, the post-WWII bride of historian Frank Randall, steps through a skew in the Scottish stone circle Craigh na Dun and lands in Revolutionary America and the arms of Highlander Jamie Fraser?putting a new spin on the notion of a two-timing woman. Bold and bawdy, but a believing Catholic, Claire struggles to live a rich and moral life?or, rather, rich and moral lives?under these extraordinary circumstances. Claire's adventures in 18th-century Charleston alternate with equally engaging chapters devoted to her 20th-century daughter, Brianna. Raised as Frank Randall's child, Bree discovers that Jamie Fraser is her real sire. She takes off on a harrowing, confrontational quest through time and space with her suitor, Roger Wakefield, in hot pursuit. Gabaldon's range is impressive, whether she's evoking the rawness of colonial America, the cozy clutter of a modern Scottish parsonage, the lusts of the body or the yearnings of the spirit. Her legion of fans will love diving into this ocean of romance. Major ad/promo; Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Club featured alternates; author tour.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Book in the Series so far! March 30, 2016
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It was only after watching Outlander on Starz that I finally started reading the series. The first book followed the television series closely and I enjoyed absorbing a few more details provided for in the book. The second book was good; but I found myself wishing for other outcomes like SPOILER ALERT, why did Claire and Jamie put all their efforts into sabotaging the Bonnie Prince Charles. What would have happened if they had actually put their efforts towards a successful outcome AND why did they go to Scotland to participate in the battles when they clearly knew and understood the outcome, etc. In book 3, Voyagers, I was totally exhausted and exacerbated by the bombardment of unlikely scenarios that collided from page to page without any down time to relax and enjoy my beloved characters. Alas, we get to book 4, Drums of Autumn and I felt that
Gabaldon finally allowed us to enjoy Jamie and Claire as they discover their new home in America. This book hit just the right notes of tension, action, passion, excitement and entertainment for me to say it is my favorite so far! I loved the ending that brought Claire's little family together safely.

This book is part of the Outlander series. While so far book 1 and 2 are the best, this one has some interesting chapters. (may contain spoilers)
It is nice to see that Brianna has reunited with her bio dad, but it is not with out pain and hurt and sadness. It is good to see the start of Brianna and Roger love story. There are many new characters in this book, sometimes it was confusing. It was a little slower to read than the others. The storytelling went from Claire first person to the other characters 3rd person which can be confusing. At the end of the book are a couple of chapters of the next book. I think I will slow down on reading this series for awhile. One of the reason, I read on my kindle and each book cost money. The next 3 books are a lot more expensive than the first 3, so I will wait a bit to see if they come down in price. In the end, I will read them all. So if you like Outlander series, you just have to keep on reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, again! September 8, 2016
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I first read or rather heard this book while driving on an extended road trip. I wanted to read it this time maybe to eke out a few more details. Other than a few inaccurate details on the climate on Frasers Ridge, and the fact that moose are not found that far south, I enjoyed the story.

DB has a gift with words, especially story telling, when she dosena stray from the path too long ;). Her humour is outstanding; I caught myself laughing at the conversation between J and C about the saints, loudly!

It made me think that everything happens for a reason...prophetically so, especially towards the end. Wondering what it would've been like to have (for me) the protection and love of family, unconditionally.
Times seem to have changed so much since then.

So I am reading the rest of the series again, but not expecting perfection as many do. I will invest time with each and try to digest the small amount of boring, with the whopping amount of camaraderie, love, kinship and more these stories have/will leave me with for a very long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars All They Have June 30, 2017
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Jamie, the hot Scotsman, and Clair, his true love from the future, are back at it again when she returns to the time travel hedge stones to go back in time and reclaim him, informing him of his grown-up daughter, Brianna, whom he may never meet...except through a photo. Jamie is transfixed and as taken by Clair as ever. Together they sail the wild seas and battle in treacherous lands to save Jamie's nephew and find safe havens for themselves. Will they ever be redeemed from their reputations and predators that stalk them? Little do they know that the key and final link to Jamie's bloodline and destiny is their daughter Brianna. But she lives in the future, never has visited the past, and might not be aware of her legacy or how to claim it. Time will tell. Time and hope are all they have.

Another fantastic book by Gabaldon. These books are just so long and loaded with info, I find myself struggling to finish, but then I am delighted when I do get to the end. The last 30% of this book had me completely sucked in. Without spoiling anything - Claire and Jamie are visited by Brianna. Brianna has some good and bad experiences in her journey. On top of Brianna's time travel, Roger Wakefield/MacKenzie follows his love through the stones. The part that had me flipping pages like a maniac is toward the end - Roger finds himself in an extremely precarious situation and you just don't know if he has any chance of surviving his ordeal.

There are a bunch of communications miscues taking place between Jamie, Brianna and Claire - all with people's lives hanging in the balance. The adventures of the Fraser/Randall/MacKenzie family is quite a ride. On to The Fiery Cross!

Thank you Diana! I must once again praise the Outlander show on Starz, they are doing a wonderful job bringing these fantastic books to life!

3.0 out of 5 stars Wanted to like it. September 18, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is the fourth book I have read in the Outlander series and I have started to notice that author asks the reader to believe in impossible coincidental meetings between characters whom have met each other or people they know in the past and usually in a different country. In this book, one of these coincidences involve a character named Stephen Bonnet whom had an encounter with both Jaime and Claire, then separately with Roger and then again separately with Brianna. This particular part of the story line is quite hard to believe. And this type of coincidence happens in these books on a regular basis. I have to admit that I liked her first book the best and that with each book, it feels like the story gets a little more muddled as the author continues the story. I also feel like the books seem fragmented and often throw in new story lines that just seem to make the books longer. I read a sample from the Outlander Companion and the author states quite clearly that she writes little bits of different story lines and then stitches them together at the end. This method is clearly felt by the reader as it leads to an disjointed reading experience. Despite this middle of the road score I gave this book, I will continue to read these as I would like to see the story through to the completion. I am hopeful that Book #5 is a more enjoyable reading experience.
