The story is quiet and the characters are very human. There are no highs or lows in the story and nothing to cause me to want to continue with the story. There were several missed opportunities. I believe Ms. Ewins wanted to express her feelings about the missionaries’ effects on the native Polynesians but she glossed over the details. I also believe that she wanted to explore Amelia’s awakening to her sensualities but, again, she missed the opportunity. There is an attempt to bring in some suspense about three fourths of the way through the book but by that time it was so late in the story that this reader had stopped caring and ending was predictable.
Unfortunately, her plans go poorly and the man she is to marry is brutally murdered in front of her. Guy, a man with a bit of a tragic history himself, manages to escape the island and finds himself on the same boat as Amelia. As two outsiders, they gradually become friends.
What I liked:
Guy is smart and so is Amelia! I also liked that despite her propriety, Amelia was more than willing to take chances and experience life. The added setting was extra fun.
What I didn't like:
The end of the book was a bit weird. Since there was very little in terms of danger, action or tension throughout most of the book, it felt a bit like the author decided to throw something in just to add some excitement and it didn't really fit.
Overall, I enjoyed the book greatly. I received a copy of Drums in exchange for my honest review.
