So that part went right back, and I bought this 5.25" bay because:
1. It adds 4 more USB 3.0 ports on top of the added USB 2.0 ports, something I wasn't looking for but comes in handy and leads to:
2. My server motherboard doesn't have a USB header, it has an on-board USB port. Many of the USB faceplates with 2.0 connect to the motherboard header but this part gets is USB 2.0 directly from my USB 3.0 card.
3. Due to this unit having a dedicated USB 2.0 host hub, it has an additional internal USB 2.0 header, essentially adding a header to my system that I didn't have for further internal expansion. *BIG PLUS*
4. Most importantly, there is NO POWER FAULT when using any of the 2.0 or 3.0 ports.
Oh, the box it comes in says that one USB 2.0 port is power only, however both ports are definitely live and transmit data.

Update: The product now works fine now. I unplugged it from one USB 3.0 header on my motherboard and plugged it into another, then everything started working. All ports now work. All USB devices are found except for one, but I suspect the old thumb drive is bad, since it doesn't work in any USB port on my computer. I'm not sure why it works good in one header and not the other. I would say purchase at your own risk now. I couldn't guarantee that it will work with every motherboard, since it works with only one of my two headers.
Could have been better designed but functions well. Easily adds 6 USB ports and installation was nearly flawless. Unplugged the native front panel USB connector from the motherboard header and reconnected it via a 2.0 to 3.0 adapter. So my native ports are only 2.0 but I've gained two 3.0 ports net.
Then connected this to the USB 3.0 Header on my Z97 motherboard and all ports were live.
Great product if you were in dongle hell like I was.
However the front panel of this device does not seat properly in my 5.25" bay(it's about 1-2mm too wide). And the SATA power cable was very short and unwieldy.
UPDATE: this thing hardly EVER works. its a piece of junk. i can plug flash drives in it all day and nothing happens. it was defective when i received it but i figured even with faulty ports i could still use it. well, now it doesnt work at all. i would NOT recommend this product at all. i contacted D-shot directly hoping to get either warranty service or a replacement. i explained the problem to them to no avail. they were more interested in interrogating me. i even pointed out that other purchasers were having similar issues. they pointed out that there were only two 1-star reviews which means nothing considering there are 4-star reviews written about the product which also cite its lack of total functionality. D-shot gets a huge THUMBS DOWN for customer sevice.
