Update: I find they don't quite last as long on chlorine as the whirlpool filter cartridges do, but they do last longer on sediment removal. If you're in it mainly for a lot of chlorine removal you might find yourself replacing these more often than most.
We have one filter for drinking water where this is used that goes to four faucets and a separate line that we only do sediment filtering on that goes to everything else except the outdoor faucets that are unfiltered.
After the first one started smelling like sewage every time we turned on the water we pulled it, cleaned the holder with chlorine, ran some chlorine through those lines and then flushed them with unfiltered water to start fresh and clean. The second one did the same thing in a little less than 2 months. It was definitely occurring in the filter, because all faucets smelled the same except those on the other line or those not filtered. Some of those other faucets sat unused for longer periods than any of these four and three of these are used daily. so it is also not a result of water setting in the line unused.
I will not buy these again.
The filter we put in after removing the last one of these and doing the chlorine cleanout again was purposely left in longer than three months and did not have this problem. You can also see more in comments as a reply to someone else's comment.
After a comment from David in December 2016, I researched carbon block filters a bit and decided he was correct about carbon block filters solving the problem. Changed to Carbon block filters in late Dec 2016 and have not had the problem since.
Update: 10/22/17 - I got about five months of use out of just one carbon filter. The filter was only being used for the waterline feeding the refrigerator, but that is where all the drinking water and ice is used by my wife and I. My setup is just this filter and the small five-stage filter that most modern fridges tend to have. This was enough to fix the bad taste in my cities water system. For my needs can cost this is an excellent solution and I'm very happy with how these type of filters perform.
Lastly, the price is perfect and I'd highly recommend this to anyone who prefers to have filtered water, but more importantly, cleaner tasting water.
