For testing I used a standard PC USB port, a car 12v adapter, and two USB charging blocks. Over the course of all testing time ambient air temperature was 73° while the cup's liquid temperature always started at 130° and the cup's lid was in place at all times except for once per 30 minutes when it was removed to take temperature readings.
For PC testing I used a standard USB 2.0 port and monitored power flow and temperature data for 12 hours. The average power draw was 500 mA ±10 mA at 5 volts for 2.5 watts power. Within 4 hours the temperature in the liquid had dropped to a very disappointing 99°... barely tepid. It maintained that temperature for the next 8 hours.
For testing with a USB power block I used both the Anker A1257 and the Rayovac PS95 to verify draw, temperature and other factors were not affected by any individual device incompatibility. The Anker A1257 is a 15600 mAh pack operating at 3.7 volts for 57.72 watt hours total capacity while the Rayovac is a 16000 mAh pack operating at 3.7 volts for 59.2 watt hours. Power draw for both packs was 850 mA ± 40 mA at 5 volts for 4.25 watts power consumption. The Anker battery was drained after 13 hours while the Rayovac lasted 14 hours while the cup's contents maintained a tolerable 114°. (luke-warm) Performance with a 12v adapter in a car was nearly identical as with the power blocks. (draw of 850 mA with 114° liquid temperature)
Having the cup made for a very pleasant drive and I even used the battery packs while walking around (pack in the purse with the cord running to the cup in my hand) for continuous warm coffee. (VERY nice once it turned cold at night)
Cup's plug broke while on the trip (my fault... it was plugged in when I took a fall and it broke the plug off in the cup) so now I need to find a new one... but I hope this technology improves to allow 1 or 2 amp draw over USB (it already is done to charge devices... why not to power them?) to allow for a much better implementation of this system. (either that or just better isolation of the cup to retain heat better)
All in all a worthy buy, but falls just short of being all it can be and seemingly for just lack of caring to improve the design.
Happily, the mug worked fine and there were no adverse effects on the other items plugged into the USB hub (two external hard drives, an aluminum cooler with three fans for the laptop).
I placed a full cup of cool coffee in the cup and expected it to become hot right away. It did not get hot as fast as I would have liked, so I thought the cup was a dud. So I went on working, forgetting about the coffee. About an hour later, I took a sip from the cup. The coffee was hot, and just right for drinking.
I realized the cup wasn't meant to heat up cold coffee. It was meant to keep hot coffee hot.
I am in Houston, TX, where winter nights get cold. I work in a room with no heating/cooling air vents (the room is an addition to the house), so it gets neither heat in the winter nor AC in the summer. Working nights during the winter always leaves me with a cold cup of coffee at my side. That's what made me think about getting a self-heated mug. I wanted my hot coffee to stay hot as I worked.
I started with a hot cup of coffee the next night. After pouring hot coffee into the mug and putting on the lid, I connected it to the available USB jack on the hub. Not once during the entire night (8 hours) was I surprised by a sip of cold coffee.
A 1/4-full mug of coffee stayed just as comfortably hot as a full cup.
As a USB-controlled heated mug, I recommend it. I have not used it in a vehicle.
I have two complaints.
The first is minor; the rim is very thick a akward to drink from.
Because of the second, I no longer use it. The cup reeks of a foul, toxic-smelling odor that I just can't get past. It is one of odors where your brain says this is really bad stuff, consume it and die. I hand-washed it several times and left in the sun for a couple of days (as per a friends suggestion). This reduced the smell considerably, but not enough for me. It is now poisoning a land-fill somewhere.

It is fantastic!!He said he even unplugged for a while as he found it too hot., This is the 3rd one I buy him and the others kept his
contents barely lukewarm.
