    The History of Duck Tape

Duct tape has adhered itself so well to American culture that it's become much more than a roll of tape. It's an enduring symbol of all in this world that is functional.

So how did this sticky wonder come about? It was World War II and there was a need for a strong, flexible, durable, waterproof tape that could seal canisters, repair cracked windows, repair trucks, and help the war effort in general. Permacell, a division of the Johnson and Johnson Company, stepped up to this challenge. Using medical tape as a base, they applied two new technologies. Polycoat adhesives gave the tape its unshakable stick and polyethylene coating allowed them to laminate the tape to a cloth backing, making it extremely strong and flexible. The resulting tape was nicknamed "Duck Tape" for its ability to repel water, while ripping easily into strips for fast convenient use.

After the war the tape was put to the more civilian use of holding ducts together. So the product changed from a nameless army green tape to the familiar gray duct tape.

Thirty years later, Jack Kahl, former CEO of Manco, Inc., changed the name of the product to Duck Tape and put ‘Manco T. Duck’ on the Duck Tape logo, giving personality to a commodity product. Manco, Inc. also began to shrink-wrap and label the product, making it easier to stack for retailers, and easier to distinguish different grades for customers.

Now, over 50 years after its invention, Duck tape is sold in more than 20 colors and is touted by its followers for having a nearly endless amount of uses. What will happen to Duck Tape? What advancements in Duck Tape technology will be made? Only time will tell.

Preparing Surfaces to Use Duck Tape

When using Duck Tape, whether the traditional silver or one of the rainbow of Duck color tapes, all surfaces should be clean and free of dust or dirt before placing any tape on them. You will want to dust the surface and then wipe the area down with rubbing alcohol. However, rubbing alcohol can dull certain surfaces, so try it on a small, inconspicuous area before applying on a large scale.

Just decorated my rental fridge (inspired by pinterest) and it turned out great! The duck tape is nice and sticky but I was also able to reposition it if I didn't get the line exactly straight. I also applied it to foam core above my cabinets, no ability to restick there. Stickiness depends on the surface you apply it to.

Our puppies ruined our dark tan leather couches by teething on them and pulling out the stuffing. I tried to hand sew them, staple them and glue them back together. Nothing worked. I got an estimate on what it would cost to repair them. The estimate was over $800.00. Finally I purchased this brown duck tape. Now I am not saying this was a professional fix, but the tape held all the tiny torn pieces together beautifully. I the took long pieces and layered them down the side and it looked very nice. The color wasn't a perfect match, but the sheen of the tape matched the luster of the leather. You don't notice the repair unless you are looking for it. This was the perfect fix for an older couch that we will be replacing in a few years. With a little effort and Duck Tape we saved about $790.00.

I'm not sure what this tape is but it's NOT real DUCT TAPE. It's more like a textured electrical tape; the texture has been printed/stamped into the tape, this has NO canvas backing. No, you can NOT rip it by hand, that's if you want the rip to go exactly and evenly across the tape. When I've tried to rip this by hand it starts to go across then down the length of the tape.

It's cheap, and I think it'll work for one particular project I need it for. But for a general duct tape you'll want in your toolbox or drawer, no, this is NOT it.

I used this tape for a keyboard backlighting mod. I bought a keyboard that has blue backlighting under each key, but the metal plate under the switches was black. I wanted the light from under the keys to reflect off the back plate and create a blue glow between the keys. So I cut thin strips of this tape and covered up the plate. The tape is reflective enough for the effect to work, but it's also matte enough to diffuse the light a little bit. I am very happy with the way it turned out, and I still have most of the roll left over for other purposes. It has the same strength and stickyness of regular duct tape. I have added photos of my keyboard before the mod, the plate with the tape applied, and then the final result.

This "Duck Brand 1304959 Colored Duct Tape, Blue" is great quality tape that very closely matches the color of my truck, which is good since I am currently using it to hold my bumper in place. The tape has held up well for two weeks now and has allowed us to put off the expensive repair to my car.

    Highly Recommended!

Am I crazy? I think I'm going crazy. This tape doesn't stick to anything! I bought it to help rig the window kit for my A/C unit and to also help maintain cords and wires for our computer desk. I also ended up using it in some crafts. I bought two different rolls and have been using both so it's not a bad apple. this tape falls off anything I stick it to within 24 hours!! It's absurd. My other purple duct tape works fine, it's just unsightly. I don't get it. It's not hot or humid where I am and be surfaces I'm putting the tape on are clean. Very disappointed!

The tape is terrible. It sticks to the roll and it's impossible to tear off clean. Instead, only a narrow strip pulls off and the rest stays on the roll. When I did manage to get a sufficiently large piece off the roll, it doesn't stick to anything. Tried it on wood, glass, plastic ... the same bad results on all surfaces.

I'm wondering if, as another reviewer suggested, the tape being shipped by this seller is old. I think it's also possible that it was stored in very hot conditions and that's why it is all stuck together on the roll.

I ordered a roll of blue and a roll in green. Ended up throwing the blue away. A total waste of money.

I switched to a roll of Scotch brand duct tape that I had previously purchased. It works perfectly.

Recommendation: Buy Scotch duct tape. Stay away from Duck Brand duct tape.
