Editorial Reviews

Review

"As someone who has kept ducks off and on my entire life I find it bewildering that they are often overlooked as candidates for the home flock. They can be easy to keep, prolific egg layers and endlessly amusing to have around. Lisa and I share equally our enthusiasm for ducks and her book sets the homeowner on the right path providing both the knowledge and confidence for success." ―P. Allen Smith, host of PBS's Garden Home

"If you're ready to move from the wonderful world of backyard chicken-keeping to raising ducks, you couldn't ask for a better friend and mentor to have by your side than Lisa Steele. With the care and attention she gives every member of her flock and the sage advice she passes along to the poultry community, any bird in her care is, well, a lucky duck." ―
Rachael Brugger, Managing Editor, HobbyFarms.com and UrbanFarmOnline.com

“I have a duck and goose farm and sell hundreds of thousands of ducklings and goslings a year – yet I found Lisa's book fascinating and couldn't put it down! Great description of ducks and their lives, evident hands-on knowledge, fantastic suggestions, very practical recommendations, and charming observations of her ducks and their actions. This book provides not only the necessary how-tos, but the equally important Laugh and Enjoy Your Ducks chapters. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is considering a quack, a splash, and an entertainer in their back yard or on their farm.” ―
John Metzer, owner, Metzer Farms Hatchery

“When it comes to ducks, Lisa Steele knows her stuff, offering up the insight and advice you will need to raise happy, healthy ducks. Whether you're nurturing ducklings or wondering what to do with your windfall of duck eggs, Steele's book offers gentle guidance on the art and science of keeping these beautiful, rewarding animals.” ―
Felicia Feaster, Editor-in-Chief, HGTV Gardens

5.0 out of 5 stars Best backyard duck guide!
Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2018
My ducklings are only two weeks old but my kids and I have already had hours and hours of enjoyment watching them. This book has been a lifesaver for a first-time ducky Mom. The ducks love the clumps of grass in the brooder and the fresh herbs in their water. They were so cute diving under the water on their first short trip swimming in their plastic tub. There is so much in this book that my local supply store didn’t know. Things that are vital for the ducklings’ health and wellness. I will refer back to this book over and over. The day after we brought them home I started thinking ‘WHAT did I do? Should I find them a better home? I can’t do this.’ I read this book over two days and came out filled with confidence and ready for the work and excitement ahead. Definitely recommend to every new and experienced family with backyard ducks!

5.0 out of 5 stars Helped get my ducklings off to a good start!
Reviewed in the United States on February 25, 2020
The advice in this book is comprehensive, easy to follow, well organized, and reflects the passion of the author, which I now share, for ducks. I used much of the information as I started raising my own ducklings, and I will continue to as they grow. I found the tips on feeding supplements to especially useful, but she shares details from her experience and research that are very helpful in many other areas. I feel the value of the book is reflected in my happy, healthy birds.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Reviewed in the United States on November 13, 2020
Excellent resource for new and seasoned duck owners alike! Read it from cover to cover it two sittings. I had already purchased me two ducks and quickly realized that I needed some more information. They have different nutritional needs and I wanted to make sure I did my best with them. This book helped me so much and was fun to read. I love my ducks, they’re a joy to watch. I recommend a duck to anyone. I think I might like them more than chickens. They’re more mellow. At least mine are mellow and are sweet with the two chickens I raised them with. This book will tell you everything you need to know!
