Ms. Bittner Roth stays faithful to the traditions, the sensibilities and the language of the era. It's superbly written, captivating, and in my opinion, has all the makings of a classic...Monique Daoust...Goodreads

The author does a great job with the characters and with the plot. It is a great story you can really get into that is not full of fluff -- Racing To Read Reviews

About the Author

Kathleen Bittner Roth writes evocative Victorian romance featuring characters who are forced to draw on their strength of spirit to overcome adversity and find unending love. Her own fairy tale wedding in a Scottish castle led her to her current residence in Budapest, Hungary, considered one of Europe's most romantic cities. However, she still keeps one boot firmly in Texas and the other in her home state of Minnesota. A PAN member of Romance Writers of America®, she was a 2012 Golden Heart® finalist.

It took me a while to get to this book and I am kicking myself for not reading it sooner. This was such a wonderful book. My emotions ran the full gamut – fear, happiness, frustration, disappointment, elation. The story is so masterfully told that you feel that you are in the great palaces of India, the lush fields of England and in bed with these two lovers.
Suri is an illegitimate daughter of an English duke and a high caste Indian woman. She was raised with her English family after her father saved her from an honour killing in India by her own family. She has lived a life of privilege and wealth, yet not quite fitting in. Her sister Marguerite is very close in age and the two are inseparable. As young ladies, they encounter a handsome man in their stables who teaches them about kissing. This sets the stage for the lifelong love between John and Suri. His kisses enflame her and she seeps into his blood and consciousness.
Ten years later, the story picks up as Suri goes to India to visit her sister who has moved there with her husband. When reading about the British life in India, I was conflicted about colonialism and what it meant to the average India person who had to bow and scrape to survive with the foreigners who tried to rule their land. The author addresses this and more. From the moment Suri arrives there is danger in the form of a rebellion by the sepoys. This coming rebellion puts a time limit on how long Suri and family can remain in India.
I loved how the author described the beauty of India, from the furniture to the verdant foliage to the beautiful clothing native to the country. She really made India seem as exotic and beautiful as it truly is.
At a gathering to welcome Suri, she encounters John, now Duke of Ravenswood and his pet Cheetah Shahira.

Miss Suri Thurston and her half sister, Marguerite, are caught talking about kissing by Lord John Fairfax. He decides to teach them what kisses should and should not be allowed by proper young ladies. He delivers a quick peck to Marguerite but with Suri, he delivers a kiss that neither will soon forget.

Ten years later John, now the Duke of Ravenswood, encounters Suri in India. He is there on a mission for the Crown and she is there to visit her sister and to finally meet her other family. They soon find that their attraction to each other has not dimmed in their ten years apart.

What happens when their missions collide? Will their love survive?

This is the second book I've read by Roth and I definitely want to read more! Both of her novels had OMG moments that kept you wanting more. I couldn't put the book down because I had to find out what happened next.

The physical attraction between the H/H was off the charts and the author did a wonderful job of building up the tension between them. I think it always adds to the excitement of the romance when there is an added amount of mystery to the story. In this case we had several plot lines that popped up. It definitely keeps the reader on their toes.

Rarely do you see a historical romance that features a heroine that is not of European descent (in this case she was 1/2 European and 1/2 Indian). It was nice to get out and away from the ton and see other things that were happening in the world during this period of time.

If you are looking for something to read that is not your typical historical romance, this is the book for you!! It had all the things that you love about the genre, but without the typical setting and or events.

The wicked kiss in chapter one was enough to hook me, if I didn’t already know the kind of journey Bittner Roth would take me on! Poor Suri is a half-caste, born of a British gentleman and an East Indian royal, who will never fit in to either world. So, darn the future Duke of Ravenswood for whetting her appetite for things she cannot have by teaching her how to kiss—beginning with why no proper Victorian lady should leave her hands un-gloved:

“All she knew was that this man’s head was bent over her hands, and his hot mouth was the devil’s playground, licking fire through her veins…She wanted to know what it was like to have his mouth on hers—a mouth that at first glance had told her rightly so—here was trouble come a-calling.”

In addition to this author’s delicious sensuality and brilliant writing, I love reading romance novels where I learn something—besides how to kiss ☺. For starters, how refreshing to have a Victorian-set romance in India instead of England! Bittner Roth certainly did her research before writing about a suspected mutiny by the sepoys against the British East India Company. Mix that up with espionage, plot twists, and searing sexual tension, and you have the recipe for another outstanding Kathleen Bittner Roth novel.

A Duke’s Wicked Kiss intrigued me from the first page. In this passionate, romantic adventure, Suri Thurston feels an intense connection to the enigmatic, darkly handsome Duke of Ravenswood from the moment of their first wicked kiss. Years later, the girl is now a beautiful woman, an endearing heroine who longs for a connection to her mother’s native land, India, and seeks out the grandmother who’d violently disapproved of Suri’s birth. Traveling to India on her quest, she encounters the Duke, a Foreign Service officer who is now involved in secret intrigues in India. As rebellion ferments and danger surrounds Ravenswood and Suri, they fight their attraction, but passion leads to a sensual, touching love powerful enough to endure obstacles, separation and treachery. This book is a page-turner that drew me in and had me rooting for the hero and heroine and their love story. Kathleen Bittner Roth paints a vivid picture of India while keeping the action flowing and the dialogue witty and engrossing. I loved this story.
