This is a highly rated (still popular today) old DOS game based on Frank Herbert's Dune book & the original (1984 David Lynch) movie. It is a hybrid adventure and strategy game. Worth getting if you like those and/or appreciate retro games or just a good, immersive game. Someone remarked that it had depth, good aesthetics, and was an exception to the usual rule that movie games usually suck; that's a good summation. It was developed by Cryo (a French developer of scifi & history based games), & initially released in 1992 on 3.5" floppies, then became the first game to be released on CD in 1993. Both versions are collectible especially if complete. Be sure to check with seller for which version, and details of condition, artwork manual etc, but to just play it, you just need disk! Graphics & artwork were unusually well done for its day, even a little animation of ornithopter flight which was a very big deal at the time. There is voiced dialogue & better music on the CD version. (Reports of music working under dosbox with floppies vary, & no voices; sound worked fine with CD version for many, or a few people needed to download VDMSound for dosbox to call)... Also, graphical tweaks were done by Cryo for the CD version, by improving travel and scenery using (then-new) 3D rendering. The CD also included some movie clips. Overall the CD is therefore better for playing, but both versions run under dosbox; see dosbox.com for dosbox version comments for this game. Game runs otherwise OK with dosbox defaults.

The game follows the storyline of the 1984 movie & adds finding Fremen sietchs & resources and then battling Harkonnen baddies, a first concept of strategy game. (Dune 2 then became the very first full strategy game, I read).

A real-time-strategy game with "adventure" story elements. Based on the book Dune by Frank Herbert and replete with images from the David Lynch movie adaptation of the same name. Game release date is early 1990s for popular systems such as PC-DOS that this review covers released on CDROM with extra video footage not found on floppy disk releases (or much curtailed if there). My struggles with MSCDEX not withstanding, this is a fine game. I normally dislike the "resource management" style games but the level of combat/strategy entwined with an alternate story based in the Dune universe was captivating. You WANTED to know what your accomplishments would unlock, though sometimes it was tedious to get there. The amazing music in the game is top notch MIDI that sounded very "evocative" of imagined sietches in a dry land.
