DCC is my current favorite of the 'OSR' rpgs... with Lamentations of the Flame Princess running a close second. The thing that pushes DCC to the front of the pack is its wild approach toward traditional content. This is NOT the game for your straight little Tolkien homage... despite having elves, dwarves and halflings as available PC races there are wild and wacky... even frightening things... lurking in every corner.
The term 'gonzo' is over-used but I think it applies here. I'm sure this game could be played 'straight' and boring... but not by me.
Despite the huge tome of a rulebook the rules are actually quite simple and generally familiar to anyone who has played D&D. What DCC adds is flavor, and tons of it. The Mighty Deeds of the warriors, the wild and dangerous magic, the weird and corrupting influence of the Patrons... there's just loads of great little mechanics that let every class and race shine during play.
Oh, and the artwork in the book is great... it's not the polished/antiseptic art of many modern game books... it's wilder/cruder stuff and character oozes off of every page. All you have to do is thumb through this book and if the visual style doesn't appeal then you should put it back on the shelf post-haste because those visuals bring across precisely how the game feels in play.
I should probably note that another great thing about the game is that there is a truckload of content available for it... adventures, sourcebooks, other settings, 'zines... the most recent DCC game I played was set in a strange 'Gamma World' type post-apocalypse, complete with robot and mutant yeti PCs. Since the rules are quite simple they're also quite versatile and can be easily turned to other genres and styles of play.
It's a great game that you'll really enjoy if you enjoy this type of game.

This game is the perfect balance between rich and simple rules, easy to implement with homebrewed mechanics. The tone and the art in the book, and the system in general, are a perfect fit for those who enjoy the older versions of fantasy RPGs. It is my favorite d20 based system so far.

As a DM with 30+ years of experience who can't stomach 4th edition and finds Pathfinder so rules heavy and unwieldy that it sucks the fun out (for me anyway), I have been hanging out in the OSR playing Swords and Wizardry and a few others. A great deal is being said and published on the internet about why "old school" style play is more fun than modern D&D. From experience, I agree. However, I agree with Mr. Goodman that we don't have to slavishly adhere to the past of TSR rules to get that experience, and that even old school play can benefit from the finer developments of "modern" D&D. I see DCC as a kind of hybrid - and more. It is entrenched in old school traditions, but the mechanics are derived primarily from 3e and pathfinder, although they are massively streamlined, and simplified. Most 3e convolutions have been thrown out the window, but the basics like a unified mechanic, three saving throws, big numbers are good, and ascending AC form the mechanical root of the game. Along with this Goodman has embraced the simplicity, imagination, and randomness of older games. There are new rules element here as well. Some good (the magic system is exceptional and is distinctively appendix N in feel and flavor), and some not so good, but I am not here to judge the specifics. What stands out is that this is an OSR game with simplified modern mechanics that successfully weds the original wonder of the game to the best of the modern mechanical developments of D&D. I don't agree with everything Goodman has done here, but no GM with 30+ years experience worth his salt ever will. The point is that the developers of 5th edition ought to take a long hard look at DCC if they want to unify the various factions of the D&D community. I have already been successful at bridging the gap between Pathfinder players and old school players in my own community using DCC. I would urge old school players to give it a try; run it for some Pathfinder and 4e "kids," and these new school players who don't know what they're missing in the Old School Renaissance can find enough familiar ground to understand what all of us "Grognards" are talking about.

I am not a fan of retroclones (basic/AD&D throwbacks). This, thankfully, is a modern system with the flavor and personality of a late 70s tabletop game without the outdated mechanics of one. The book is written with an almost manic tone instead of the textbook style writing of many modern D&D publications and I find it to be a nice change. The mechanics themselves are an extremely simplified version of OGL 3.x with extraneous items removed to fit the style of play presented which results in significantly faster play than most 3.x games.

Starting with each player having multiple 0-level characters with iron-man (3d6 down the line) stats? Pretty fun in practice. Throw the ones with bad stats under the figurative bus :)

Race as a class? Pretty good and, if you want to expand beyond that, there are third party resources that have you covered although it's hardly necessary. I like the idea that ALL Elves traffic in sordid deals with Outsiders.

The corruptive and random elements behind the spells are neat as is the... different? spin on vancian-ish magic.

I really enjoy it and if you want a lethal, balls to the wall, heavy metal game then this is it.

Even though I only play D&D 5E. This book is a nice edition to my role playing collection. The art is very reminiscent to old school D&D. The art is just amazing. Even though the rules within are different than 5E. There is some concepts and inspiration that can be pulled from this book. I highly recommend anyone who enjoys RPG’s to get this.

Excellent RPG, 5 stars, but beware of older editions floating around... I received the 4th edition from the seller, not 5th, so I missed out on the free pdf amongst other things. Disappointing but my fault ultimately. Still, the 4th edition product itself is awesome so I am not dropping any stars for that (because that's how PRODUCT reviews are supposed to work!!!) this is just a warning to maybe check with the seller and not assume you will get the latest version. My bad.
