This book is a classic, an absolute masterpiece, and should be in the library of every author, roleplayer, DM, GM, storyteller, referee, or host, regardless of your preferred system or edition. I use this book no matter what edition of D&D I'm playing. It's advise is universal and covers a broad spectrum of topics from the expected how to play AD&D and advice on specific rules calls, to more general advise on how to make rules calls, how to keep your players immersed in the game, how to be a good host, and even what books you might read for fun and inspiration. This is more than just a game manual. It is a work of art and culture.

As life long D&D player (35 years and counting) I always looked back to the time when The first edition came out. I remember how I worked the summer to save my money to get all the first books. Over the years as I got old the books disappear and 2nd, 3rd editions came out. I played when I could but it seemed to lack something. Finally here comes 4th edition and wow was I disappointed. It was so dumbed down. It made look back to the start. So I searched and found the original Dungeon Masters Guide. The first edition is a work of genius by the Master of the Dungeons himself. In this tome lays the basics of what is the greatest game in role playing. This is rpg Genesis. I am so glad I grabbed it and start playing by the old rules again.

I pretty happy with the shape this book is in. The listing stated this as being in good condition and it is. The cover has a few signs of shelf ware like rounded corners and slightly soft edges at the top and bottom of the spine.
As far as the quality of the item, it's what I played as a teenager. 1st and 2nd edition are my favorite versions although 5th edition is good too. Finally completed my collection of original printings of 1st edition with this purchase.

I bought this because I’m going thru a phase of nostalgia- we were middle class but I got nothing as a kid and was forced to borrow all of my friends volumes to study and covet.

I ordered this because the ad used a picture of the Sutherland cover, and the description lead me to believe that it was this 1979 edition. The book I received was the Easley cover. This was aggravating and disappointing. Please don’t mislead potential customers. The return process was painless and handled by Amazon services, and that is the main reason I am not rating this lower than three stars. I will look elsewhere.

Disappointed. I should have read the reviews. I feel I’ve been duped. The edition I was sent wasn't the one displayed (the efreeti cover) instead, I received a later publication of the dungeon masters guide with a different cover. On the positive, the book was in good condition for it’s age.

Exactly as describe. Worn but serviceable. Even had a bonus map that previous owner inserted. Happy with purchase and experience.

If like me you spent hours sitting in a mates bedroom or garage, sitting on the floor, surrounded by A4 sheets, pencils, lead figures, strange dice and snacks. Then you'll get this book. As we all played Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, this was the Holy Grail of all books as this was the Dungeon Masters Guide. Basically the DM was usually the quiet mate, who got his chance to lead a game and inflict hurt and hate. I've never seen so many teens cry from characters being killed.
All you needed was an A4 pad and as long as your mates had the books you were good to go.
This is the first edition of The Dungeon Masters Guide, I had a midlife crisis in 2008 and spent a couple of thousand of pounds collecting all the books I'd lost or left round mates houses.
Buy this, it is 240 pages of memories of campaigns, Dungeons and character creation.
Well recommended.

This is the original ADnD rules. They are much simpler than the current set of rules. Therefore much easier to run as a DM. the material in this edition is arranged very logically. All the generator tables are with the appropriate reference material. All the steps in doing things are together in one place, and all the relevant tables are there right at your finger tips.
