It’s a gorgeous set, but check it well because I just unwrapped my copy today and the PHB had several pages stuck together and were oil stained (probably from manufacturing). I’ll be returning this set and rebuying, but this was disappointing.

I had an old edition of these books, so when the special edition came out, it was a great excuse to update to the newest information. The boxed set is gorgeous, and the covers are interesting and unique. Unfortunately, the binding quality is awful – the publisher should be embarrassed. A friend ordered the same set, and his players manual came bound upside down into the book. In my case, two of the books had visible glue on the bottoms of the pages, and on the first opening where are you pulling away from the spines. I would wait to buy this for a while until the production kinks are worked out.

I had bought this as a gift for my fiancé, and to say that I was disappointed would be an understatement. While the books themselves are beautiful, they’d be significantly nicer if, say, the pages weren’t glued together in places. Or were manufactured so the pages could be spread open to read, instead of the paper not being cut all the way. The initial screen was missing print in certain places. Although I received a replacement set, I still had to pick and choose the pieces that were in “better” condition to make a decent set, and the other ones are going back. If I had received the second set after returning the first, to say that I would be annoyed would be a blatant lie. If something is supposed to be a special edition, especially for this amount of money, I expect it to be, well, made with some modicum of care. The books and screen are beautiful, but they’d be significantly more beautiful if they were made with any type of precision.

Bottom line: I wouldn’t recommend one buy this set unless you’re willing to take a major chance. It’s very nice, but wasn’t worth the headache, at least for me.

Amazing set of the core rules

I am so happy with these books. They are in perfect condition. They also showed up a week earlier then originally expected. I love the feel of these books and they are so shiney because of the amazing metal foil paint. They are amazing and I love just looking at them. The art and paint job is oustanding. Well worth the price. I've been playing 5e for years and I finally decided to buy my own set of the core rules and I'm glad I waited.

Beautiful, but not without its flaws

First thing’s first: this set is BEAUTIFUL. Everything shines perfectly in the light and makes all of the colors pop from the black covers. An amazing addition to any collection and to anyone who frequently plays the game, as these even have all of the updated errata to game rules. Whether it’s on a shelf or at the table, it’s gonna turn some heads.

Now, onto the unfortunate bad. The printing of these editions clearly has had some issues, as I found minor ink stains in the spine on ~5 pages throughout all 3 books (The one pictured is the largest stain I found). The DMG also had pages that got folded up during printing which made them look like... that. Nothing which can’t be solved with a bit of cutting, but it’s still good to be aware of. There was also minor cosmetic damage to the outside of the box, but I’m not so concerned about that.

If you get this set, inspect every page thoroughly for damages, but what you’ll be left with is a very special set of books!

It might scare you in the dark, if there is a little light

This set is absolutely flippin' amazing. Honestly, I expected a little less from this. In the dark, the light makes the foil light up with much more contrast than in the light. I had my players handbook out, and was setting up a campaign with my brother, I turn over to the side of me, and there is the face of a red glowing man with a skull on his head, and a bright orange beard, with bright orange eyes! Honestly, I've been addicted to looking at these with light behind them now.

Anyways, apart from the beauty of the set, the DM board is pretty helpful. Has a section for Combat, combat statuses (paralyzed etc), Difficulty Checks, dice checks of various sorts, time frames, movement, it's quite helpful. The art side is very interesting, and while I hate dragons, I can intimidate my players without having to look at them. Muahaha

This set ended up being much more interesting to me than I thought, and I thought pretty highly of it. The contents of the books are the regular contents of the Players Handbook, Monster Manual, and Dungeon Master's Guide. This is not an issue though, this is exactly what I was looking for.

The artist of the Covers, Hydro74 I think it is, also did the cover for Xanathar's Guide to Everything Deluxe, and Volo's Guide to Monsters Deluxe, as well as one more box art I think. Not quite sure what that was again, though I'm sure it's not too hard to find, the art is stunning, nearly everything is foil, not just the red, not just the blue, not just the purple. The Monster's manual has a sort of silvery tint in the light, but a blue tint in the dark. The Player's handbook has orange and red. The DM's Guide, Purple. Each of them have a sort of metal color foil as well, a silver or tarnished silver, or steel. It's very beautiful. On my box, on the bottom side, the foil was worn, other than that, the rest of the entire set was perfect, without any hiccups. No stuck pages, no oil, no glue, no warped pages, exactly what's in the picture.

Another thing to note, in the binding of the books, there is a red bookend, it adds a tiny bit of flare to the book. If I could have added anything to these to make them better, it would be to gilt the pages. With red, blue, and purple. That would be insane. You can actually do this yourself, but please be weary of the type of paint, ink, or metal that you try to gilt the pages with.
