Dunkirk opens as hundreds of thousands of british and allied troops are surrounded by enemy forces. Trapped on the beach with their backs to the sea, they face an impossible situation as the enemy closes in. The story unfolds on land, sea and air. Raf spitfires engage the enemy in the skies above the channel, trying to protect the defenseless men below. Meanwhile, hundreds of small boats manned by both military and civilians are mounting a desperate rescue effort, risking their lives in a race against time to save even a fraction of their army.

I was quite impressed w/ it. I'm a soldier, retired now. I've done my time in a combat zone, and certainly been shot at a good deal. This depicts that experience quite well. I'm well acquainted w/ scrambling to get out of the way of gunfire. We all did this.
The uniforms looked like perfect reproductions, the accoutrement were either fine reproductions or were originals, and weaponry were original. There certainly may have been slight anachronisms that only an avid collector would notice. I would comment that the ability of a powerless, gliding Spitfire to shoot down a diving Bf-109 would likely have been pretty low? Other than that, all seemed credible to me. The attitudes of the soldiers on the beach at Dunkirk, and attempting to get a ride out, the RN and yachting seamen, and (at the end of the movie) the British public, all seemed plausible and consistent w/ what I've learned about that time and the British attitudes.
The overall "feel" of the movie, its impact, is what's most important. And I believe that that was the impact of the event at the time for the British people involved.
