Silicone or Germanium? I think both are valid choices so you are not going to hear me say one is "better." That said, when I learned that the Fuzz Face was being re-released with a germanium transistor I HAD TO HAVE ONE. Fresh out of the box, I was a bit disappointed to find that the foot guard did not stick to the center of the unit. I'd push it down and it would stay for about five minutes before popping back up again. Admittedly this is a small issue but you would think that for the money, it would have a decent adhesive. I do however really like the rubberized knobs as I find myself often tweaking them with my feet as I play, so that was a superior choice over hard plastic. Now for sake of understanding where I am coming from sonically, let me say that I play only single-coil guitars through this pedal (Strat, Tele, & Jaguar). With that in mind, if I have both the "volume" and "fuzz" knobs on the pedal at max, and the volume on my guitar at full, you really cannot tell the difference between the neck and bridge pickups at all. It is one big sonic mush. But I found that by turning the guitar volume knob down to 5, I get plenty of delicious distortion with a tangy high-end bite. If I want to go to a fuller sound I may go up as high as 8 which sounds like a wild animal trying to rip through my amplifier. All this is a byproduct of the slew rate on this pedal, which is fast and furious, but I can dial in what I want very easily. Beyond 8, the low end just starts to get out of control so I just don't go there anymore. Once I figured out that bit, I REALLY started to like this pedal. It sounds exactly like what I want a germanium transistor to sound like: Full, Deep and MEAN.

My pedal has the smile logo, so it doesn't match the picture. Also, it didn't work at first! I found that the base plate, when screwed back on, was touching a bit of metal on the "in" plug, and thus shorting out, I guess - by loosening the nut and turning the plug a quarter turn I solved the problem. I suspect they test them without putting the back on, so don't return it just for this problem. Look for the offending spot by simply touching the interior guts of the pedal with a guitar plugged into an amp, and with the battery in. When my touch elicited a buzz, I found the problem. It sounds fuller (and less noisy) than a Boss DS-1, but gets darker when the fuzz is turned down. Not a hugely adjustable sound, but if Hendrix and Eric Johnson used one... also, they are giant-sized, so consider yourself warned. Complex chords sound like sludge at full fuzz settings too. It's a fuzz pedal, after all. And, it only takes a nine volt battery, and the back plate is clunky to re-screw on. Plus, my no-slip thingy was unsticking itself, like another person mentioned. Not perfect, but simple and tough, so it's a trade-off. I consider the full on fuzz sound hard to recreate, so I like it.

There is no substitute for tube driven germanium fuzz. This one is true to the original. Side by side, I could tell no difference between the new unit and the vintage unit I already own. Crunchy. Papery, Grinding.

This thing is built like a tank. It's heavy and stays where you put it. The sound was exactly what I expected. A classic 60's Hendrix tone. My only complaint is the lack of a power jack forcing battery use only. I remedied the poblem by installing my own AC input jack.

This pedal keeps all of the bottom end of your sound, on or off, unlike many distortions. As a consequence, you can play rhythm or lead thru it without a jarring change in the "size" of your signal. The fuzz knob gives you more high freqs as you turn it up, and a darker sound dialed back, obviating the need for a tone knob. And famously, it cleans up when you lower your guitar's volume - a rather flexible device, with its two dials. It sounds more alive and immediate than many overprocessed digital boxes. Plus, the sound of Germanium transistors is to some ears a pleasant change from the harder edge of Silicon. I really like this thing, but it's not subtle, so try before you buy. Recommended.

I was actually quite surprised with this pedal not having the original NKT275 germanium transistors, so I did some research on the NTE158 germanium transistors which are in the new Fuzz Faces(this one)

I found from multiple sources that the NKT275 transistors are in fact duller sounding and produce less fuzz, whereas the NTE158's have more fuzz and are far more stable than its predecessors. But all of that aside, this fuzz pedal produces the warmest, finest, and creamiest fuzz I've heard. No clone will give me this, I guarantee it (tried them all)

Word of advice, if your new to this pedal, this pedal does NOT like being mixed with other pedals it usually needs to stay on it's own.

If you like Jimi Hendrix, or Eric Johnson, I recommend buying one of these. Make sure it's the smile logo fuzz face too. Without the smile, it's not a Fuzz FACE.

there is no ac adapter and you have to unscrew to replace battery. there is no way to turn off device with cables attached. One knob fell off as I removed it from package, the other is very loose. The sound is good, but the device is very poorly manufactured.
