When they arrived, I removed the Duofolds I was wearing, to try these. Outside, it was 50 F and calm, but my trousers felt “ice cold” wherever they touched my legs. I’d never experienced that wearing thermal underwear.
I walked around the block. My legs were cold. I took the new underwear off and walked around the block again. I couldn’t tell the difference.
I’d never before worn insulated underwear without a fly, but if Duofold designed them that way, I was willing to try it. I found it very inconvenient.
The drawstring waist was a surprise. There is no locking slide, so i would have had to cut the loop and tie the ends. That would be inconvenient, and one might have to cut the cord if the knot jammed.
I changed back to my “real” Duofolds so I wouldn’t catch cold.
According to the Oxford Dictionary, a thermal garment provides exceptional insulation. These drawers are not exceptionally warm.
The term “thermal underwear” was coined in 1951 to describe a knit developed for the Navy. In 1954, John E. Morgan found a way to produce a similarly warm knit with ordinary knitting machines. His Duofolds gained such a reputation that, according to a judge’s finding in 1966, larger companies not only violated his patent, they conspired to put him out of business in violation of the Sherman Antitrust Act. When Morgan retired and sold the company, he stayed on the board to assure quality. He died in 2001.
I’ve always trusted Duofold above other brands, but this garment is a far cry from any mid weight thermal underwear I’ve ever worn.
Now for the fabric, it is comparable to a a tight underarmour performance shirt; It's not very thick at all, but if it was any thicker, I believe it would impair flexibility and would probably get too hot while running. For the people that want a thick warm thermal to wear to keep warm, you might want to get something heavier, but for me, it works perfect.
Btw, I am 6'3" and 175 lbs: the large fits perfect around the waist (and it has a drawstring), and the legs go about an inch above the top of my running shoes. Basically exactly the length in the picture shown. I am rather tall and slim, so a large would probably go longer on someone else whose not as tall, but I don't see that as a problem. The tights didn't slip at all when i was running.
For the people giving it two or one stars for "Not having a fly", I'm guessing these are older people who don't know how to correctly shop online. You can obviously see in the picture that there is no fly, and nowhere in the descrption does it say it has a fly. I'm actually glad it doesn't, as it might have interfered with my running.
Hope this review answers some questions for people wondering about buying this product for athletic purposes
They're comfortable but not too heavy or thick. They allow for a full range of motion. I have another pair of tights from a different company, but I prefer these ones for the lighter feel. I actually wear them around the house in place of sweatpants now, much to the displeasure of my friends. Also, my girl says they make my butt look good and i'd be lying if I said they didn't make me feel sexy.
