Your suspicions are right. The system is rigged against the voters. And Darryl Perry tells you the story of how and why.
Perry goes back to remind us that we used to be able to bring our own ballot. That's not like today. Today, third parties need to dedicate half their campaign just to gathering signatures to get on the ballot. Perry explains how Democrats and Republicans write the laws in order to snuff out competition. These series of stories continue with topics on gerrymandering, campaign financing, and debates.
Finally, Perry offers solutions. Among these reform solutions is Approval Voting. Approval Voting is a single-winner voting system that lets voters choose as many candidates as they want (not a ranking system). The candidate with the most votes wins. It's immune to vote splitting, voters can always vote their favorite without wasting their vote, and even losers get a more accurate measure of support.
Perry also recommends proportional voting systems. Proportional systems give everyone the fair representation they deserve. Your group has 20% of the vote? You get 20% of the seats. Proportional voting is also immune to gerrymandering. Contrast that with our current system. We either have gerrymandered single-member districts or councils where minority voices are completely shut out.
The electronic version of Duopoly is $2. For that price, your decision should be easy. Having personally read dozens of books on political and voting theory, I easily count Perry's book among those most useful.
Those that enjoy this book will also appreciate:
- Grand Illusion: The Myth of Voter Choice in a Two-Party Tyranny
- No Debate: How the Republican and Democratic Parties Secretly Control the Presidential Debates
- Gaming the Vote: Why Elections Aren't Fair (and What We Can Do About It)
- Real Choices / New Voices
Duopoly is a must read for anybody interested in a political alternative to the two-party system, or for anybody who still believes that our current system is truly representative of the majority of Americans. This reviewer looks forward to further works from Mr. Perry.
