Product Description

Dupli-Color Mirage color system is a unique color shifting aerosol paint formulated to create multi-colored effects from all angles. As the light source and viewing angle changes, the color appears to change. I have only tried the red/blue version with excellent results. It's a dark color and I would characterize the color as actually a shifting between dark red purple and a deep blue purple. At a steep angle you can actually see a metallic bronze/gold shift in it. I used it on a finely crafted well sanded pinewood derby car. For my next project, I will be doing the body of a Fender Stratocaster guitar that has seen better days. Once completed, I plan on getting a two part PPC automotive clear coat put on rather than using the step 3 clear coat can. This is for better durability. The manufacturer of the paint says auto clear coat would be compatible. Understand though, that this paint takes a lot of coats of the step 2 can to get a good color shift. It's a job but the results are well worth the time and effort.

First I will say that the paint is very good quality, which is expected from Duplicolor but the amount of the base coat and color coats for the price is not very much. The cans are 8 oz which is considerably less than the average 11-12 oz spray paint can. So my advice would be to buy black base coat if you are doing wheels because for full coverage and a decent amount of coats on each wheel you WILL run out. The color mid coat is great if you are doing small projects like maybe a gas tank on a motorcycle for adequate coats but for wheels the small can only can do 2-3 coats so the color change effect isn't as good as it could be. The color is an indigo when you look perpendicular to your wheels then as you move right the color gets blue/violet and as you move left the color gets more red w/ a little gold. On the other hand 8 oz of clear coat was plenty. If the cans were all 12 oz this would be a 5 star product but I can only give it 4 because of how good the paint looks despite not having enough for that "professional" look.

I just finished applying my three coats of color coat for this product, and I am not pleased with the results so far. I have an Italian commercial espresso machine whose back and side panels were ready for a facelift. I decided it would be interesting to have a color shifting paint job.
I read and reread the directions and prepped my panels. I shook the base-coat can as directed and then was ready to spray. Nothing. I depressed the nozzle again. Nothing. I pulled off the nozzle to examine it. The stem coming from the can was of such low quality it look like someone had ripped it off with a dull hacksaw. The tip of the stem was actually frayed. Then I took a look at the nozzle. The depression pin was bent to the side and with a little help from a mini screwdriver things were back in working order.
My next problem occurred when the can was about half used. The spray started surging. The fan pattern would go from about 3" to 1 1/2" and then back again in an uneven pulse. There was no way of maintaining a smooth sweep with slight overlap since the fan would increase and then suddenly decrease. I thought that since I had to spray the panels while they were laying flat to get all the sides this may be the problem. Some spray cans have a reference dot on the rim of the can to indicate pickup tube position. These cans have nothing. I felt that I was already this far, so I'm already committed. I went on to the color coat. I shook and shook the can. I did the mixing rotation they directed. This can did the same thing when it was not even half used. The people who remarked about the small coverage area with the product are not exaggerating. I was barely able to get three coats. The color shift between red and blue is evident.

The idea of a color changing paint is pretty neat but I was pretty disappointed with this kit. I followed the directions to the letter, and put on about 6 coats of the color, and still got pretty poor performance with the color changing effect. Looking straight on the color appears blue but when you look at it at angle there is only a subtle change to a dark red. And this color change is only evident in bright lighting, completely unnoticeable in dimmer lighting. A better option I found was Rustoleum's "Color Shift" paint. Maybe they put more flakes in or just made it better but either way I was rather disappointed with the Duplicolor Mirage paint

Followed the application instructions to a T. Even shot it in my buddys spray booth and the results were mediocre at best.Far too dark and almost impossible to detect the color change unless under the brightest light and even then its crap. Would not buy this product again or recomend it to anyone.

I have use Mirage Color Shifting Paint Red/blue on my motorcyle and my helmets. They are great. The color change is really something. I have had people ask me about the paint job. The only way it could be better is if they made it as a roll on for bigger jobs
