From a functionality perspective, it's fine. But it has a lot of significant limitations that make it much less useful than it could be, or than I was expecting. Below are the problems I found, from most significant to least.
Perhaps the biggest design misfeature is the power switch. When DC power is first applied to the inverter, it does nothing. Before you get AC power (or even DC USB power), you have to push the "on" switch. If DC power is lost for any reason (because, for example, you started your engine) then AC power goes out until you push the button again. To compound things, the DC plug is rather difficult to push in, making it easy to get an intermittent connection. This makes it very easy to think that you are charging your device when actually nothing is happening.
Also, the circuit breaker seems to trip at a much lower wattage than I would expect. Now, the good news is that this happens the right way -- no need to replace fuses, or even to turn the inverter back on. But the device is marketed as a 100-watt device, and my laptop only pulls 65W when charging. But I cannot run the laptop and charge the battery at the same time -- it's one or the other.
The device makes an annoying high-pitched noise. Partly this is the fan, but I think the electronics themselves are also creating audible noise. This may be inaudible to the middle-aged, but I would guess that it might be positively loud to the teenaged. (I am in my late 20s and am not known for my good hearing). My guess is that the pseudosinusoidal circutry runs at 6000 Hz or so, and that there is enough iron in the device for eddy currents to create the noise.
Finally -- and this really is a nitpick -- the design is such that it is impossible to access the USB connector if there is a DC adapter plugged into the AC outlet. This seems trivially unnecessary, since the USB plug could easily have been located around the corner on the side of the device.
So, in conclusion, this device works fine but I have to believe that there are better products out there.
All in all I took away one star for the inability to use just the USB cable of my iPhone. Otherwise, I think you'll find this will meet, if not exceed, your needs.
- Compact
- Lightweight
- USB port
- Auto powers off
Cons:
- Noisy, annoying fan
- Did I mention the fan was loud and annoying?
An almost great inverter. I purchased this to power a Macbook Pro in my vehicle. Prior reviewers said it was quiet which is a priority for me. This is any thing but quiet. We use it in a 2006 Mazda minivan which isn't particularly quiet. At highway speed the noise from the cooling fan on the unit out does the wind and tire noise of the car. To my ear it is particularly whining and annoying which leads me to unplug it if at all possible.
On the upside it is lightweight and very compact. You could easily take it with you with your carryon bag on airlines. It also has an electronic switch which "turns off" when ever the car is turned off which means that it doesn't automatically power on when you turn the car on again. For me this is a plus. The USB power port work fine for my ipod and for our GPS unit which had a faulty cord for while. If the fan weren't such a liability it would be the perfect inverter.
The unit has a small fan inside that comes on when the electronics inside get too warm. Be sure not to block the vent slots in the case, especially the circular ones on the bottom since this is the only intake for the fan. I don't find the fan too loud, being just barely perceptible when it comes on while I'm driving. Mine feels solid, well made, is simple to use and does what it's suppose to.
Product size is great. It is about as compact as can be made.
I give the product a 4 star rating, rather than a 5 star, because storing the product is somewhat cumbersome in your briefcase. No efforts were put into the design to wrap/store cord when not in use. This is rather irritating if you are constantly storing it while boarding/leaving a plane. In all other aspects it is a 5 star product.
Since I just received the product, I cannot comment on its durability at this time, but the case seems very sturdy and well constructed.
