All the things that I thought weighed this item more favorable over the other ones turned out that they weren't that important: It really isn't that important to be able to read the input voltage into the unit, since most units out there that aren't digital will still monitor input voltage but will warn you of low voltage with a beep, which this unit does as well. You really can't monitor output wattage all that well since the sensitivity is done in my experience in ranges from 0-60-80 (I never really loaded more than 100W on the unit): Anything less than 60W would display as 0 Watts on the display.
The aesthetic/finish quality of the device is questionable since the ONLY button that one can press on the unit apparently was covered with some cheap plastic that dried out quickly and dented in, leaving me with a more pronounced clicking noise every time I tapped the button, so I chose to trim the circumference of the piece of plastic that covered the button with a pair of scissors and get rid of the piece. It's important to note that I never really exposed the unit to that much sun; my GPS's holder suction cup has withstood way more punishment than this did.
The cigarette lighter plug lacks a spring to allow it to have some give into the receptacle, and since it doesn't have one, it is constantly disconnecting itself with normal wiggling of the cable during normal driving conditions, and since the unit was digital, it wouldn't normally come back "alive" on its own, and it became annoying to have to watch the unit every stop sign to make sure that my items were still getting power. I ended up chopping off the plug for one I bought at amazon and doing some simple welding with a hot iron and some black electrical tape.
Finally, now in July 2012 the unit doesn't give off any more AC: one has to depress the power button for a couple of seconds to get it from a "000" to "888" on the display. Once it gets the "888" it latches and it's safe to release the power button and the unit then, I assume, will go through its normal start up diagnostics and go on to produce AC power.
Now, the unit will go through the "000" to the "888" but it doesn't latch anymore and turns off by itself shortly after.
I contacted Duracell customer service but they advised that the unit might have suffered a short, which is interesting since the original Plug on the unit was not fused, and mine was with a 5A max.
Cobra CPI 480 400-Watt 12-Volt DC to 120-Volt AC Power Inverter with 5-Volt USB Output is a comparable unit that I'm thinking of getting, and I know Cobra makes their own devices, it isn't "digital", and it also makes continuous 400W, instead of the 320W continuous on the Duracell 400 W.
Good Product, Great Experience. Highly recommended.
Btw - I use this in India!
