Founded in 1939, Duralex has been manufacturing glassware and tabletop products in La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin, a city in the heart of France. Since 1939, when Duralex invented the glass tempering process, the name Duralex has been associated with resilient glassware, thanks to their proprietary tempering process. The original tempered (toughened) Picardie glasses are still in production in France and are known as the "Original French Tumblers." The Picardie glass is the perfect weight: functional yet stylish and feels extremely comfortable in the hand. They are equally suitable for cold or hot drinks, conveniently stackable, impact and chip resistant, microwave and dishwasher safe. With the help of continuous investments and commitment to quality, Duralex has reached a level of excellence that makes its products recognized throughout the world. Duralex is and will always remain a true French manufacturer of glassware and tabletop products, and is the only glass manufacturer that makes 100% of their products in France.
Top customer reviews
Both my wife and I grew up with these glasses in our childhood homes, so when it came time to purchase glassware together, getting Picardie was a no-brainer. We own the 8.75oz, 12oz, and 16oz glasses. We'll use the 8 3/4 for our morning milk or OJ, and we use the 16oz for smoothies, but these 12oz versions get used for everything else. They're the perfect size for a glass of water or holding an 8oz can of soda (you only want to fill them to about 2/3 of their rated capacity to prevent spilling), and we get by far the most use out of them.
There's a reason these glasses have been around, essentially unchanged, for almost 90 years. I would highly recommend them to anyone.
First, one of my tumblers exploded when I was taking it out of the dishwasher. By "exploded", I mean literally exploded. It send tiny glass pieces flying all over my dishwasher, floor, the folds in my clothes, and countertop. I had to throw away all the food that was on the countertop because it was now covered with glass DUST. Little pieces of glass were embedded in my skin that had caused tiny tears (that still bleed). Awful experience. I took a few pictures, and emailed Duralex about this glass that exploded and never received a response.
I chalked it up to a deflect, and bought some more Duralex from Amazon. When it arrived, the box was completely undamaged, but again, one glass had completely shattered into glass powder inside the box, and when I reached in to unpack one of the remaining glasses not having first realized that there was a broken glass there, I got tiny pieces of glass lodged in my skin. It took me a few minutes to pick all the glass out, and now I have tiny bleeding cuts on my hands.
One glass, it might have been a fluke. But two glasses? Something's wrong in the way they're manufactured. I'm switching to Libbey stackable glasses, which are coated with an after treatment that makes them break into large pieces, not tiny pieces that can spray up to 10 feet.
TWO GLASSES that had broken not as a result of them being dropped, but seemingly for no reason.
My son was emptying the dishwasher and one glass fell over in the dishwasher, nothing hard. It SHATTERED all over my son and dishwasher.
Not to mention the glasses we have left are cloudy.
We are a family of 3, we got 2 sets. So not like it's a high use situation.
Don't waste your money.
