FROM DUST is a fantastic read.... it's got it all, passion, tragedy, upset, a little mystery, added to romance, sexual attraction and a whole ton of heat and passion

When I was reading this unputdownable (yeah, I've gone there!!) book, one of my overriding thoughts was that we know day to day that tragic things hit ordinary people as happens in the story for Syd, but I've never ever considered the ripple effect it causes.... You think 'that's so sad' but go on with your own life.
Freya's writing made everything that happened feel so very real and raw. Jeez, how Syd ever managed to battle through all of the years she did I've no idea. My heart and head were all over the place while reading From Dust - so many emotions were brought to life through the story of Sydney's life which was devastating, heartbreaking and tragic, but she is one helluva strong woman and, through the love, care and lack of judgement of those she meets at The Skipper, she rises like a pheonix from the flames and it's wonderful to see that come through in the story.

Gunnar didn't have the easiest of histories either, though his road wasn't as bleak or as difficult as Sydney's. He was a light in the darkness that she felt - though her initial impressions of him before actually meeting him weren't quite the same! He cared and loved deeply, knew from the outset that Syd needed help and was determined to do his bit regardless of what else was going on in his own life!!

I adore the 'family' element Freya's books have. We definitely don't choose the 'blood family' we end up with (as Syd knows to her detriment) but the family we surround ourselves with is often more loving and supportive than those we are born to ever could be!!!!!

Some authors are so gifted in their writing, they can take you to the scene of the smell, fright, the longing, the alcoholic daze. The warmth of being loved and protected. The hunger and the filth of living on the streets. Being so weary yet so alert for danger.
With out proper counseling, a person cannot forgive them selves for anything or something in particular. Nor can they forget.
This book is so well written and put together, I can't believe I am reading it. I wish I was a professional reviewer so that I could put together a decent review. I can't I'm too floored.
One thing I didn't mind is the "F" bomb. This writer blended it right into the story and it flowed so smoothly that you weren't aware of it. Other writers make it sound crass and dirty and down right "icky". The love scenes were moist and plentiful. I will read it again.

Just to start, I'll say that Freya Barker is now my favorite author! This is one of the most incredible books I've ever read. I was getting a bit 'over' the typical fluffy romance and after reading my first of her books, Slim To None, I was hooked! She writes about real people and real issues and life! It isn't always great or easy. Everyone has trials and real life drama and medical issues and events that happen that you almost never recover from.

This book is about the latter. Sydney is found homeless in an ally when a wonderful woman that follows her instincts offers a hand up and out. Viv makes her feel safe enough to come in to The Skipper for a hot meal and everything changes for Syd. She's offered a job, clothes and friendship. When she meets the owner, very tall and broad Gunnar Lucas, Syd is nervous and fearful, but soon everyone at The Skipper makes her feel at home.

Gunnar isn't looking for any kind of relationship. He has his hands full with 2 kids, an ex wife that is determined to drink herself into a hole and a pub to run. Of course his feelings for the timid little bird now working in his pub has him confused and conflicted.

I won't say any more about the specifics but you won't be able to put this book down. It's about a woman trying to drag herself back from a devastating event she isn't sure she can recover from, a family who lays all the blame at her feet, but becomes amazed at what can happen when she finds herself surrounded by people who care. People from her past eventually find her and all hell breaks loose but growing stronger she's finally able to stand on her own two feet. I just can't say enough about this book. It does not end with a cliffhanger but I understand the next book 'Cruel Water' takes up with the same cast of characters we got to know in From Dust. I can't wait to read it too.

I've been a fan of Freya since I had the opportunity to read her fantastic Cedar Trees saga and all the wonderful characters that inhabit, but nothing has made me prouder or more amazed at the brilliance and diversity that seems to flow from her mind than after I had finished reading From Dust. Judging by the depth of the writing and the perfectly flawed and complex characters that flesh out this incredible story of guilt, redemption and forgiveness- Freya has poured her heart and soul into it and it simply shines through in every word or nuance or moving good deed that the players manage. Vivian, Gunnar, Gunnar's kids, the staff at The Skipper and especially Sydney make up a band of misunderstood misfits who somehow find a home, understanding and love in their close knit and kitschy little group.
Sydney is the star of this tale, after having suffered so much for so long she expects so little and is continually amazed when something good happens to her. Reading her pain and experiencing it, her tragic story and the repercussions that stemmed from it my-heart absolutely shattered and there is nothing worse than sobbing in bed at 2am and trying to do it silently so as not to wake up hubby but the beauty of this story is the love and stunning connection that transpires between gruff bar owner Gunnar and his newest employee. It unfurls slowly, beautifully and with just a touch of magic- the sexual tension and fun that occurs between these two was the icing of the cake of a marvellous book.
