There is no real setup required, the gun and spider are already 'programmed' to read each other. Simply unscrew the top of the gun to insert the batteries (aren't included), and the toy is ready to go. There is a charging cable for the spider component, but ours came charged and was good for about 2hrs of play - I can't tell you how long the spider will go, but he was able to play for 2hrs before we 'convinced' him it needed charging so we could get him to bed. We did charge it overnight. He hasn't played for longer than 2hrs, but IMO if it works for 2hrs, I'm happy.
I was expecting the spider to stop for a little longer, so the child can be more surprised when it comes back to life and starts running around again, but no... the spider stops for about 1-2seconds before its up and moving again. If anything he loses interest in the spider when it makes its way under a couch or some other place he can't reach, but it doesn't phase him... he just likes to run around with just the laser tag gun. He's learned how to 're-load' ammunition, and switch between the different style guns pretty quickly and likes to use the laser tag gun in other play.
The gun makes a shooting sound when you press the trigger and runs out of "bullets" making a metallic sound without the bang after about 12 shots where you have to hit the magazine to "reload". I gave it to him yesterday and not only he was able to hold it and reach the trigger but he was able to shoot the bug right away. He is no longer interested to his other noisy guns and today he asked me to get another one for Grandma so they can play together. An orange he said. I am thinking, I may have made a mistake, by the time we get to the rest of the grand kids this could get expensive.
I attached a video showing how the bug moves around the floor. Highly recommended!

There should of been at least 5 spiders with the amount it cost.
