Top Customer Reviews
This humidifier is another big step up, both in cost and in features. The first new feature is an ultraviolet light to kill any bacteria in the tank before they could be sent into the air as mist. That's a high-end option on whole house furnace/air conditioner systems, and very welcome. Next, this Dyson can be run as either a humidifier backed up by a fan, or just as a fan. Since we live in a near-desert area, the added humidity is welcome even in summer, and ups the perceived cooling power of the fan by about ten degrees in summer.
Another important advantage is that this comes with a remote, one that is able to set the desired humidity precisely anywhere in the range of 30-70%, and any of 10 fan speeds, ranging from almost inaudable to very powerful but still quieter than most room fans. There's a timer for auto-shutoff any time up to 9 hours later, and an automatic setting that chooses the best humidity based on room temperature. Not mentioned in the instructions, but very welcome is that the remote locks easily in place atop the unit via a hidden magnet. If ever needed, a single screw gives access to the 2032 battery running the remote for easy replacement.
Industrial design is excellent, on a par with anything from Apple. There is a large but stylish power brick, rated for 1.5 Amps at 120 Volts (180 watts), but the most I could get the unit to pull even at full speed with the humidifier on was 47 watts, and 4 watts is all it takes to run the fan at low speed without added humidity.
The only downside is that it's a bit complex to set up and clean. To add water, turn the clear part upside-down in order to see the cap mentioned in the instructions. For cleaning, it suggests using an ounce of citric acid in a quart (liter) of water to wipe everything down weekly, with a more thorough cleaning monthly or when putting away for storage. I suspect that would also be good for our other humidifiers, though we've never done it, so I may also just wait on this one to see how long it takes to visibly NEED cleaning.
Overall, this is the best humidifier I've ever used, and it now has a permanent home right next to the bedroom computer on which I'm typing this review.
Update January 5, 2016: Sadly, after 4 months of use, the humidifier stopped working, eventually showing an F2 error (call the hot line), and the unit started to leak water. The hot line was happy to authorize and pay for its UPS return for repair on December 18, 2015. I haven't received it back yet, as of today. I'll update this again once I have.

We have an indoor garden full of carnivorous plants and houseplants, my significant other has a couple of wooden pianos, and I also have occasional pollen and dust allergies. Most plants need high humidity to grow well, wood instruments are sensitive to changes in humidity, and a high humidity level alleviates allergy symptoms. This product solves all those issues and more.
I currently own two BONECO/Air-O-Swiss 7135 Ultrasonic Humidifiers, and while they are stylish and give a fine mist, they can be a hassle to clean, and keep clear of bacteria.
— DESIGN —
There is a standard of industrial design expected from Dyson: forward-thinking, futuristic, built to stand the test of time. Version 1.0 of their humidifier is an elegant piece of art/science. It combines their now replicated O fanless ring, on top of a clear water tank, with a base built with UVC-lights that kills 99.9% of bacteria in the water.
A critique I have is the blue color pictured isn't accurate. The images make it seem like a bold metallic blue, the truth is it's blue with a hint of purple. Granted, I love my purple electronics, but I'm buying blue here; gotta coordinate my apt ya know?
Another critique, and this is a big one, there is one LED indicator on the front that tells you what your humidity is set to. It *doesn't* tell you what the actual humidity is. This is a major no no. The Air-O-Swiss lets you set your humidity, and the main display is the actual humidity which makes sense so you know if the device is reaching its target. You will need a separate hygrometer (Indoor Humidity Monitor), to read the humidity in your house.
— FUNCTIONALITY —
The entire thing is made up of three pieces: the base, the clear plastic jug, and the top O shaped fan/mister [see photos], plus a power cord. They are very easy to put together. To add/change water you have to: remove the upper O piece; take out the clear jug (which has a handy handle) from the base; unscrew a small plug; fill it with cold (preferably distilled) water; plug jug up; place jug back on base; place the O top piece back on. It is a few extra steps with that O piece compared with most humidifiers that require you to remove the tank, unscrew cap, fill it, screw cap back, and place it back on a base; it's two extra steps with Dyson. With this particular design, I don't currently see anyway around from simplifying this process.
As for noise level, you can hardly hear it. It gives a low decibel white noise (like a fan) if you have it in your bedroom.
— REMOTE —
The remote is magnetic, and curved, to neatly attach on the top of the humidifier. There are six buttons with images printed on it that are easy to understand without needing a manual.
— CLEANING & UVC LIGHT —
I bought this because I thought I would have to clean it very little. My logic was, if it is 99.9% bacteria free (99.9% because they can't legally guarantee you 100%), then there is no need to clean it as there is no bacteria to reproduce itself in the machine. However, the instructions calls for light weekly surface cleanings, and a monthly citric acid wash. This isn't a big deal as other humidifiers require you to clean much more often. You can reduce cleanings even further by filling with distilled (pure) water.
The number one reason I bought this was because of the UVC-light bacteria-killing feature. If you didn't already know, humidifiers are a breeding ground for bacteria, because who really cleans them as often as instructed? I certainly don't. Ain't nobody got time for that! This humidifier reduces cleanings significantly. Dyson exposes water through a "three-minute kill cycle" of UVC (short-wavelength ultraviolet) light before it is very finely misted into your air. You have no idea the piece of mind it gives me knowing I'm breathing in clean air. That itself is worth the price.
— SKIN —
Another reason to own a humidifier is it does wonders for your skin. If you've ever lived through a cold winter in New York City, you'll know the heat can come on very high with not much control over it. Yes, that keeps you nice and warm, but it leaves your skin cracked and sometimes bleeding—not cool. Humidifiers are great during these times. They will help keep humidity levels up (50% is the recommended amount for almost all times) and your skin will thank you for it.
— IMPORTANT NOTE —
You may turn your device on and it looks like no mist is coming through but you feel fan movement, calm down, your humidifier isn't broken. The room humidity is already high enough that only the fan is on. The misting will happen when your target humidity setting is *above* the current room humidity level.
— CONCLUSION —
Overall, for the first version of their humidifier Dyson really did a fantastic job. It is a bit pricey (but not as pricey as it could've been). You also have to consider that there are no monthly items to replace so all the cost is upfront. No $15-25 filters to buy every 4-6 months, no additional parts to buy. You buy this and that's it.
If you want a near-silent humidifier that will give you clean, bacteria-free air, that will moisturize your skin, your plants, your musical instruments, this is the product for you. Everyone that doesn't live in the tropics should really have a humidifier in their home. Recommended!
*** UPDATE 1 ***
One month update: I got an F5 error message on it today. That basically means I should turn it off and restart it. Don't know what that means, hopefully this will not be a recurring thing. (Error code information here: [...])
*** UPDATE 2 ***
Three month update. The LED number display on the front has become unstable. The bottom of the first number no longer turns on, and the top part of the second number is fading [see photo]. Hopefully this is only a display issue.
