For most of the products, especially the vacuums, it is a hit or miss on whether you are getting more for the price paid. In general, the consensus usually is that the products work better however not necessarily in an amount equal to the higher price premium.
The AM09 is an oscillating, remote-controlled, heater. Period. The heating elements, I believe, are on the sides of the oval 'output shaft' however when the heat is on the sides do not get hot. They are warm to the touch though not a safety concern.
Like other remote-controlled heaters, this can also function as a general fan. This is labeled as a 'cooling' feature. Know, though, that there is no cooling mechanism, i.e. a compressor, to actually cool the air. Simply by circulating room-temperature air it will in general lower the degrees a bit -- just like any other fan. There are no blades present where the air outflows from. This is done from the rotating turbine in the base. It is very similar to an airplane turbine however the blades here are of different size (like a cone drill bit) and it directs the air up to the top.
What I found with the airflow (on the 'cooling' option) is that it is equal to about a medium on regular house fans. It provides more stable airflow, however. With regular house fans the air is thick and short, with gap in the middle. The Dyson air is full, precise with no apparent gap. It feels a bit cooler than regular fans because of this precision. There are two options for air output -- 1. narrow and 2. wide. Again, note that the air is *not* cool. It is pushing regular, room temperature air.
The Dyson outputs 7.4 gallons of air per second -- quite an accomplishment for such a small device. You won't get this with ordinary fans.
This Dyson is a thermostat controlled heater, like many other stand-up heaters I have tried. The difference is that the thermostat actually works correctly on the Dyson. For other heaters, I would set it for, say, 75, and it would not even turn on. If I set it to 78 it would heat the room up in the mid 80s. The heat function is very similar to ceramic heaters, in that it blows 'softer' hot air out. Because of the direction of the air, it heat up very evenly across the room. I found a temperature gradient of -4 degrees from 15 ft away from the machine in a room. Not bad!
The cool function, as mentioned above, is simply a fan. As a fan, it operates well and, technically, produces a much more 'impactful' airflow than normal house fans. However, I doubt you will notice or like the difference if you are wanting the extra price paid to equal just that in proportion to the airflow. Meaning, you probably won't be impressed.
Much lower than normal fans when operating on the 'cool' setting. More of a persistent, solid air output sound. Is similar to a low whisper of people talking. In an office, you will absolutely be able to talk on the phone while this is on, even if it is very close.
The height of the Dyson is 2 feet, or a little over half a meter. It is constructed on the outside entirely of solid plastic. The look is very modern (as you can tell from the pictures) and goes well with new decor that is 'uniquely' engineered. It goes well in homes however is very suited for an office environment where you might want to 'show-off' a bit.
For those that are price conscious, this will not give you what you are wanting--a heating/cooling function that is warranted by the price paid. For those that are not price conscious, you are not really getting proper value for the price. However, it rivals any typical ceramic heather/space heater that is meant for small-to-medium rooms, outputs more air-per-size, and is a lower volume. There are positives on the Dyson that you won't get in typical units. Moreover, for making an impression or keeping with your 'modern' decor trend, the Dyson can't be beat.
So I've called Dyson and they called me back (several weeks later after the day of incident) on some Illinois number that appears I can't get through to now. At first I just got a woman's answering machine now I get nothing. So right now I'm totally out of my money despite reporting it directly to Dyson.
This could have been a lot worse than it was. I was lucky it didn't continue to the point where it started a fire. Don't let this happen to you. I love Dyson products, but even if this thing was "energy efficient" its obviously still drawing a LOT of power like any other space heater.
The first time I used it, I actually turned the heat to 78 thinking I should make it kick out more heat, but by that afternoon the basement was warmer than the main floor, so I set it to the same temperature as the main floor and it's quite comfortable.
The basement does use 4x6s in the walls as is fairly common now for extra insulation, so I doubt you'd get the same effect in a poorly insulated basement, or even in a garage in the winter when it gets to below freezing and the door opens multiple times a day. However it works perfectly for my needs.
Additionally, the heat it pumps out is rather comfortable, the fan does not blow very hard (I mostly don't feel it) and it doesn't dry out the air. The fan itself is rather quiet, you can hear it but it shouldn't bother you. It's quite safe for children, my 2yo is obsessed with it so I made sure it didn't get too hot, (You should do the same before you let your kids or pets near it). Finally, it is rather attractive. I was a bit hesitant on other models of heaters because they looked like something you'd see in a retro 1970s home or a college kids dorm, but I rather like the look of this one especially for the effect.
