As I said in the introduction, this vacuum cleaner puts all others I’ve used or even heard of to shame. It’s in a class by itself. To test, I ran my previous vacuum cleaner over a 9’ x 12‘ rug. Then I ran the Dyson over the same rug with the results shown in the photo below. If you don’t believe me, or think I must have doctored the photo or threw the test, I don’t blame you. I did the test and didn’t believe it myself. I can’t even see how the run could carry that much dirt / dust if at capacity but this rug had been regularly cleaned using a brand name vacuum cleaner with another run just before the Dyson.
In addition, the cleaning of this rug didn’t cause the dusty gritty smell running conventional vacuum cleaners. I have a very sharp sense of smell. The Dyson operates with no smell at all. It causes no sneezing after use like other vacuums. Its claims for its HEPA filtration are accurate.
The noise is reasonable and if rated against its cleaning power, it’s whisper silent. There are none of those annoying high ringing harmonics some other vacuum cleaners exhibit. Likely due to the aggressive rug beating brushes in the head, the cleaner almost self-propels forward but takes a bit of effort to pull back. The effort is not extreme but there is a marked difference between moving forward and backward.
The ball steering works as claimed making for quick and easy maneuvering. The canister detaches easily from the unit for easy removal of detritus.
If what you are seeking in a vacuum cleaner is something which will leave your house as clean as any device can make it, read no further. Just buy this device. It works that well. It also, through the filtering, will likely reduce allergic reactions from those in your house.
The paperwork comes with two instances of those picture / no words assembly instructions which tend to annoy more than help me. However, inside the larger paper booklet there are step by step detailed instructions in plain language. I had no issues unpacking or assembling the unit.
Then again, maybe I missed something because the cleaner comes with three accessory tools: a crevice extension, plus both a plain and a moving brush upholstery extensions. The tool holder will hold any one of these three extensions – which frankly baffled me. What do you do with the other two? So either there’s a bit of a design flaw or the assembly instructions weren’t clear to me, but I am amazed if the tool holder is really limited to one of the three supplied tools.
Here the Dyson rates poorly. The cleaner is not pleasant to use. For example, the lock to upright isn’t a positive switch, but you just pull the handle down and hope it releases. It does 1 in 3 times. Other times I need to stomp the head flat to get it to release. It’s not easy to get the handle locked in an upright position either. A few times I thought it locked but when I let it go, the cleaner went flat forcing me to bend over, grab the handle and give it a good shove to get the click to lock.
The accessory hose is part of the handle. The airflow switches from the head to the accessory hose when the handle / hose is locked in the upright position. Thus, if the cleaner is on when you lock the handle in the upright position, you get an alarming vacuum coming from the top of the handle where there are vents to accommodate the hose / handle.
The power cord does not retract into the unit. Instead, you need to wrap it around the hooks supplied at the rear of the handle. This will give you a nice nostalgic experience vacuuming like your grandfather did.
Deploying the accessory hose isn’t terribly difficult but not enjoyable. You need to pop the vented top cap then release the hose / wand using a button and finally pull the hose / want combination from the rest of the handle. Replacing it is plainly fussy. You need to get all the parts lined up and in the correct order to get it all back into being a handle. It’s not difficult but not easy or delightful either.
If there is another vacuum cleaner which can do the work as well as this one, I’d have to see it to believe it. The Dyson is that good cleaning better than I thought possible with reasonable noise and no smell to get your allergies to kick in. If you demand the very best in a clean house, I seriously doubt you can do better than this amazing unit. After running this cleaner through my house, the place has a fresh air smell as if the air were scrubbed. The smell or lack of smell is like you get after a rain. It’s a wonderfully effective cleaner.
Sadly, though, the ergonomics don’t match the performance. Cleaners costing a fraction of the Dyson have retracting power cords and easier to deploy / stow accessory wands. They also come with tool holders for all the tools – although this apparent lack may be my fault.
Still, for me, the point of a vacuum cleaner is to clean using airflow. The Dyson wins against all other devices in this category that I’ve used or even heard of. I look at that canister’s dirt load after running over a supposedly cleaned 9’ x 12’ rug and just shake my head in wonder at just how great this cleaner works. From a cleaning and health view, this is clearly the one to get. If you or yours suffers airborne allergies, that goes doubly. It’s really one heck of a machine.
This vacuum has a 270aW motor, which is exactly the same power as the Shark Rotator True Pet. Any kind of comparisons you can find right now compare Sharks' best, to Dyson's later models. The Dyson Cinetic is one that Shark at times compares itself to, is a 180aW motor (90aW weaker if you're not paying attention).
The Dyson was purchased from Dyson's website for a few reasons:
1.) If you own already own a Dyson, they will give you a 20% discount if you register your vacuum on their website
2.) Full refund and free return shipping if you don't like it
3.) Free tools - I got 3 free tools (which was advertised on their website) however in addition to those I got a 4th free tool, a free carrying case for all the tools, and $100 off thanks to being a Dyson customer.
Arriving in the mail, the vacuum comes in a very easy to assemble state. All the material is put together well and it certainly gives you the impression that you got good material for the money. (the Shark, not so much). Even the little details like the wall adapter plug is nice and premium, especially when you compare it to the Shark. Its not a big thing, but it definitely shows that you paid for the more premium price.
Vacuuming the floors in my house has been great. While I think the Shark actually did a TINY bit better picking up small dust in the carpet, the Dyson absolutely strikes back with the hard flooring. You can literally FEEL the Dyson suck down to the floor when you try to break apart the seal. The Shark in comparison was no where near this powerful on the hardwood, and even required a second pass in some areas to get everything up. The Dyson comes with an automatically adjusting head, that will move up and down so you have no switches or buttons like the Shark. The shark you need to change it from rug, to carpet, to hard flooring. The Dyson will self adjust for all of this, all you need to do is turn off the brushes if you need do for floors. Moving this up and down the stairs is nice and easy, and vacuuming the stairs is also. I was amazed at how much more dog hair the Dyson picked up over the Shark, it was immediately noticeable the second I emptied the bin. You can vacuum the carpeted flooring with the vacuuming rotating attachment, or the vacuum itself. The extendable wand also easily surpasses the Shark in suction strength, as apparent by many trials.
The included rotating attachment also performs better than the Shark variant. The shark variant is cheaper in build quality, bulkier, and not as efficient at picking up debris. The shark version has a rotating piece that works like the main vacuum bristles, where as the Dyson has two spinning heads that travel in circles, and not like the main vacuum bristles.
Things I dont like:
The Shark has a nicer dust collector. The trap door works better in that you press the button and everything drops out. With the Dyson, you almost have to wiggle to get it all out, and some of the dirt gets stuck on the hinge.
The wand that the Dyson has is a pain in the butt to put back in. Its easy to pull it out, but the method in which you put it back involves too much time and lining up to get it to go in all the way correctly. This is sub-par even compared to my DC25 that I replace with this.
The kick stand went from the foot pedal style on my old DC25 to this weird no pedal push down method. It works ok, however sometimes when I just want to move the vacuum on the little rear wheels, it will pop down as if i'm going to use it to vacuum. Again, its sub-par compared to the DC25.
All in all, I believe this a top tier product. The Quality, performance, customer support and the perks like returning custom discounts is an unbeatable package. Customer support was painless and this Dyson comes with a 5 year warranty. Dyson sells premium vacuums for a premium price, but you get what you pay for. Dyson may not be as cheap as a Shark, but then again you dont see Dyson taking up Sunday afternoon infomercial slots on antenna TV.
