This thing is *really* quiet. One particularly unique feature of operation is that the oscillating part of the fan is turned off each time you power down the fan. Now, since the oscillate button is right next to the power button of the remote control, I don't see it as an issue. On low speeds, the only way to know it is running is when the blinds vibrate on the window on the other side of the room. On high speeds, the gentle swoosh of air is still amazingly quiet for the vast air flow coming out the front.
With this puppy wide open, there is some noise. Moving air in itself makes most of the noise. On the lower speeds, it is almost silent. Compare Dyson on 3, 10' away, PC 20' away. The fan noise from the PC is louder.
In an A-B comparison to a bladed tower fan, Dyson top noise about the level of speed 1 of 3 speed bladed fan.
Plus, it is safer, when the puppy put his nose into the fan, I wasn't worrying about an injury. Made in Malaysia. Three easy to fit together pieces to assemble. The box is apparently made of carbon-nano filament cardboard. I suggest a Dremil tool. All very pro-environmental (and sturdy). It is almost totally cardboard, so look for remote controls in the little folded corners of the packing. The motor unit seemed very attached to the box. The box is very sturdy.
- It is NOT powerful. Output at anything less than max is laughable. I have a $30 tower fan that's 10 years old that moves more air on its lowest setting. After having owned a couple dyson vacuums and being thoroughly impressed with the air blades I come across in public restrooms, I guess I just expected something better than a small child fanning me from across the room with a broken paper fan.
- It is NOT quiet. It most certainly can be, when it's off, or on its lowest settings (1 through 2), but anything higher will require you to don ear plugs if you want to get any sleep. I bought this fan because it was advertised as quiet and powerful, primarily for use while I sleep. It is neither.
Solid two stars STRICTLY for the industrial design.
UPDATE: Dyson customer support is top notch. They got in contact with me shortly after this review, and immediately sent me a replacement fan to ensure there were no problems with the original one. The new fan is better - still not as quiet as I would like but much better than the original. I am very impressed with their customer care.

Couple reasons. First off, this is not a fan. Its an air mover. So, it is about 90% quieter then a fan. If you have trouble sleeping with fan noise, that's eliminated. At higher setting with more forced air, really no difference in ambient noise. So, you can have this baby on the highest setting, blowing you away, and the noise is minimal.
Second, its stylish. I know, I know, I must be crazy. But lets face it. Fans are UGLY. This is sleek, stylish, and doesnt look out of place in a nice house. so, you spend all this money on expensive furniture, decorating, cleaning, etc. only to plunk a big honker of an ugly fan in the house all summer? That too is crazy.
Third, its a SNAP to clean. Takes all of about 15 seconds. Typical box fans have dirty black fan blades, you have to take the protective screen off, its a hassle. BOOM. clean in the time it takes you to put your pants on in the morning.
Fourth, if you have children, here are no places to stick fingers or tongues. I had a co-worker whose child was sticking their tongue in the fan to see what would happen. Ok, bad parenting, but trust me, the doctor bill that ensued would have easily purchased a few of these!
And lastly, its a def. conversation piece. I have had so many compliments and discussions about this darn little thing. People are like, you spent WHAT for a fan? And the next thing you know, they have one. LOL. do yourself a favor and check it out. Its an AMAZING product.
The output is a nice, steady breeze. The remote control is convenient. But the noise to air movement ratio is disappointing--especially as you move up the settings.
At 01, you won't really notice the noise. At 02, it's subtle. But with each increase thereafter the decibel level seems to go up exponentially--while at the same time actual output is incremental.
If it didn't cost so much, I'd be much happier with it. I can only surmise the motor is a pricey element, because the other materials of the Dyson are basic. The top part even seems "cheap;" is that to keep the weight down for the oscillation?
Then there is the matter of controls. There is a lone button on the Dyson itself: off/on--hold for decrease. For the other functions you must rely on the remote--lose that, and your SOL. I took the liberty of ordering a spare remote, just to be safe.
Should you buy it? If your inner geek screams for hi-tech, then go for it. But if you want the Dyson to replace a conventional fan, you may be disappointed, especially for the price.
