Top customer reviews
Vacs come in a variety of designs; which one is better really depends on personal preference. Here is a comparison between the Dyson DC58 and the Black and Decker Platinum. I've also included a simple video.
BD Lithium Ion 20v
Dyson nickel manganese cobalt 21.6v
BD 3lbs 12 oz
Dyson 2lbs 13 oz
BD flat stand that holds accessories. Just place the vac on the stand to charge;
Dyson: plugin adapter; no accessory stand
BD main body is the canister; door is clear to see contents; access simply by pulling the handle to the door and pouring out the contents. Door opens to side.
Dyson: clear cylinder shaped canister; easy to see how full it is; but to empty you have to slide the release which is in an ackward position that is hard to reach and get hold of. It takes two hands just to release the door. Door opens down.
BD the handle is centered over the top of the vac; weight is well balanced; vac is round
Dyson: Handle is at the backend of the vac like holding a pistol; weight is all sticking straight out; overall look is square
Both have their advantages: BD feels more comfortable long use, Dyson can reach into places better.
Both come with straight nozzle and furniture brush. But the BD comes with a hose. A hose and attachment accessory kit is available for the Dyson at about $80.
The Dyson has two power levels which you switch using a push button on the back of the vac accessible with your thumb. The lower power works fairly well but true comparison with the DB is the max level. Here they are fairly equal.
I don't know how they tested the suction of the Dyson to be 3 times greater than any other brand. My video shows both in action. The Dyson was set on Max, the BD has only one setting. They both did as good a job in my opinion.
But with the Dyson on max power the running time is cut to a third according to their own feature list. I vacuumed out my car and it took all of the battery in less then 10 minutes even with a low setting for a couple minutes. With the BD there is battery to spare. But the Dyson did a decent job without max setting.
Neither is horribly loud; according to the free (but hardly accurate) decibel meter on my iPhone both register about 95; literally they are about equal except the Dyson is a higher pitch.
These vacs are fairly similar in comparison; the choice is more personal preference. I prefer the BD for it's balanced weight and more conservative look. I also like that the nozzle is at the end of a detachable hose (included). The Dyson's straight on design makes it easier to get into places and you don't have to bend over quite as much.
The BD lists for less then $150 but includes the hose. The Dyson lists for less then $250 but the hose kit is about another $80.
Three important notes on this machine:
1) It is ONLY the handheld "dust-buster" version that come with a brush (shown) and a pointed vacuum attachment for small items and corners. It does not come with the wall mount; only a 6ft standard outlet plug/charger.
2) It is noticeably more powerful than previous Dysons - the Animal. It found dust and dirt I had no idea was there.
3) The attachments from other Dyson stick/cordless vacuums fit this model, including the powered floor broom and powered (handheld) brush. So, you can use the attachments interchangeably. Super Important.
This device is expensive but worth the money, and you can build you collection of attachments to fit most small home/office needs. Perfect for dorms, small condos, automobiles, especially if you have pets that require frequent vacuuming or small kids. Convenient enough to use frequently.
Unfortunately, the filth/dust container is no bigger than previous models. It would change the design, but we could use a bigger container to reduce the frequency of emptying. And it's a bit hard to clean. Use an old toothbrush.
The only drawback that I can think of is that it has to be constantly charged since it's that powerful. Will last at about 5 min and then dies.
This one most certainly does -- in spades, in fact. I took a trip from the top-floor, through the bottom floor, and (finally) to my car with one charge. This little sucker gets the job done (as silly as it may look...purple with its "Alien" genre feel...really?) However, at the end of the day, I don't care how it looks; I care how it performs. This device performs ideally (thus far!).
The convenience factor justifies my high rating: I can go from bedroom to bathroom to second bathroom to car in one trip. The canister is easily emptied once full, and work resumes.
But what vacuum cleaner (handheld or otherwise) doesn't work out of the box? I currently have a "dinosaur" vacuum (four years old) that is due a trip to the recycling center; my disappointment with my first purchase motivated my getting this handheld--my first venture into the purported "never-loses-suction" Dyson brand. I will only be certain of this five-star review after regular and extended usage. However, so far, so...excellent.
