There is no denying that Megadeth – Mustaine and the brand – remain a force to be reckoned with in the metal community, especially for those of us that have spent nearly 3 decades following their career and lapping up every ounce of metal forged. But along with all of the glory has come the frustration with stylistic changes and more significantly … the dreaded line-up changes. The 2014 departure of drummer Shawn Drover and guitarist Chris Broderick – who were excellent at their trade and went on to form Act of Defiance – was the latest disruption that threatened to put the proverbial “nail in the coffin” to Mustaine’s Megadeth machine …and all this over fans ranting over wanting a reformation with Menza and Friedman. Seriously? Having seen both Drover and Broderick on the Rust In Peace anniversary tour a few years ago, these guys gelled with Ellefson and Mustaine and more than carried their weight in metal. But Mustaine has never been one to give up easily in the face of adversity and it seems there has always been a bevy of talented musicians ready to answer the call to serve in the Megadeth army. Enter Kiko Loureio (Angra) and Chris Adler (Lamb of God). These guys were more than willing to bring their own enthusiastic and talented skills to the aid of the venerable, yet resilient Mustaine. Following in the trend of current dystopian movies/themes whilst still treading in the familiar waters of Megadeth political and sociological commentary, Dystopia not only delivers a blistering performance by the new band but it also hearkens back to the early years where thrash ruled the day – this one feels a lot like the Rust In Peace era, but there is more as well.Read more ›

Holy crap!!! I did NOT see this coming...right out of left field!
This album....has to be considered one of the best in their catalogue! Dave's voice has NEVER sounded better. Gone is that sort of nasal tinge that at times made me cringe...(heh...that rhymed) and either they are playing in a different register that complements Dave's voice...or his voice has ripened with age. I've been a fan since
the band started (yeah..i'm old, Dave's age) And i still love 80's thrash....and i'd say this is right behind RUST IN PEACE and a close second with PSBWB.
Yeah....it's that good!

What a great album. There's not a bad song on it, which is pretty rare these days. I got the Best Buy version with the bonus tracks and they're just as good as the rest. There are other bonus tracks such as Me Hate You on the Japan release and I'll never understand why they don't just do a deluxe CD with all the bonus tracks. Finally, I hope they can keep this lineup for a while, I think the addition of Kiko has added a dimension that was missing on previous albums. He adds some depth/ variety to the tracks, the piano at the end of Poisonous Shadows comes to mind, so kudos to Mustaine for getting him.

Megadeth has been hit and miss for years now. End Game was pretty good but the band sort of lost me after Youthanasia. The magic was gone when Freidman and Menza left. After hearing a few preview tracks I was really looking forward to this release.
I thought for sure the only good songs would be the ones they previewed but I was…oh..so..wrong. I’ll say it now. Best album they’ve done since RIP and I’d tie it with that album as the best in the bands catalog.

“The Threat is Real” kicks off and hearkens back to the Rust in Peace era. I’d call it Holy Wars II. It also has a really cool intro. The title track is up next and stays in the same vein as the previous song. The main riff is a tad repetitive but not a deal breaker. Leads smoke. The only drawback is toward the end it pretty much rips off Hangar 18. Big harmonies at the end save the day. “Fatal Illusion” is up next and this is classic Deth. Perfect song. “Death From Within” took me by surprise as another growly Mega classic. “Bullet to the Brain” has an almost “Mary Jane” feel from SFSGSW. “Post American World” has a brutal intro riff. Another killer song. “Poisonous Shadows” is the longest song on the album and it’s an absolute masterpiece.
The updated drumming works wonders here with some fancy footwork from Addler. Even the symphonic elements work wonderfully. It’s good to see so many groups old and new incorporating orchestra and choir elements so successfully. “Conquer or Die” has a spectacular intro. Just beautiful. I wasn’t expecting the album to get better as it went along but it does. More classic Deth and SO LONG since we’ve had an awesome instrumental. “Lying in State” is a monster. Very aggressive. Great vocals from Dave. "The Emperor” is just a blast of a song. Fun and contagious.

I have been listening to Megadeth since their first album. I've stuck with the band and they remain one of my favorites. I have to say that I really like the band's new line up. This album feels like the Megadeth from the past. Prior to this album my favorite albums have been Rust in Peace and Countdown to Extinction. Dystopia is now easily one of my favorite albums.

If I had to pick a favorite track, I think I would lean more towards The Emperor as my favorite from this album.

I look forward to seeing Megadeth live again this year with the current tour.

If you are a fan of Megadeth I don't think that you will be disappointed with this album. There are several really great tracks, and some great solos. I am looking forward to future releases from the band.

I highly recommend giving this album a chance.
