The controls do need some getting used to (hold the switch to turn on/off, toggle to cycle through the EQ options) but the fact that it is rechargeable makes this extremely portable. I would even use it whenever I was at home with headphones on.
I've since gotten a new car (with AUX input!) and rooted my phone (headphone boost!) so I no longer use it. In fact, I gave it to a friend along with my old FM transmitter so he can stop listening to the same 2 CDs over and over again. I gave it a try recently before I handed it over, and there's still a noticeable difference (again, especially with the kick drum) even in my new car with a custom kernel boosting the headphone jack output.
For the size and battery capacity, this lil amp really adds a lot of punch!
The power button is a "slide and hold" type so you wont accidentally turn off the amp. Quickly sliding the power button does change the EQ mode of the device. It has 3 EQ modes and a no EQ mode. I prefer EQ 1 which gently but not overly boosts bass. I'm listening through a set of AKG K240s and the bass on those isn't overwhelming so headphones with more of a bass focus might give a differnt experience. The opposite edge has the volume rocker switch. I personally think this is a little solw to react to depression. But I find a comfortable setting (MAX :) ) and use the volume control on the iPod. This won't work however if your using a dock to 3.5mm adaptor. The mode indicators are well thought out. The main LED which shines through the belt clip attach point in the corner indicates charge and on status. Red - Unit is off and charging, Blue - Unit is on and charged or not connected to a charger, Purple - unit is on and charging, Off - unit is off and charged or not connected to a charger. There is a second small LED on the back side of the unit which uses colors to indicate EQ mode. The included accessories are a nice touch. A USB to mini-USB cable for charging, a short (4") 90 to 90 degree male to male headphone cable for uncluttered connection between source and the amp. And a 2' straight plug, male to male for longer runs. It ships with two belt clips as well.
It has 3.5 mm stereo jacks for in and out. There is a clip but it's not necessary, mine just hangs off the end of the IEM cord.
The E6 has 4 different EQ settings indicated by LED color. No LED = flat, red LED = EQ1 (bass boost), blue LED = EQ2 (different bass boost), purple LED (red + blue) = flat with -3db level cut for high inputs. You can lock the EQ and level settings so accidental button pushes don't change it. Runs for quite a few hours on a charge-up from a provided USB connector.
To my ears, this is a very flat and quiet amp. Recommended!
