5.0 out of 5 stars Go "All-In" For Texas Hold 'em On Kindle! November 11, 2010

I believe that in my last review of a Kindle game created by EA, I mentioned wanting them to create a Texas Hold 'em game. I guess my psychic abilities were working, because here it is, and it's another great game for the Kindle!

Play career mode, play in tournaments (against 4 out of 6 possible opponents).....there's even a one-on-one game, winner take all, that I was offered after winning my first tournament (I proceeded to lose all my previous winnings). This game looks very nice on a Kindle, and I have found no bugs during play.

Even if you are not a great player, there is an adviser available during the game (by pressing the "A" button) who will give you suggestions on whether you should fold, bet, bluff, etc. Don't listen to her all the time, though, as she is just using common sense.....and we all know that sometimes you just need plain old luck to win a hand.

One great feature of this game is the keeping of stats. When checking your stats, you can even see how many of each type of hand you have had during your history of play. Many PC poker games don't even supply you with those stats!

Another thing I've noticed with this game: The opponents seem to make more realistic moves than in other PC poker games. It gets tiring in PC games when every time you go all-in, other players call your bet more frequently than they would in a real game. Not so with this version! More often than not, if you go all-in, unless the opponent has a great hand, he will fold (as is the case in most actual tournaments I have watched). I bluffed my way into a few nice pots doing this.

If you have friends or family with you who want to play, there is even a pass-around mode, where up to four people can play at once.

EA Texas Hold'em will let you play one of the most popular poker game on your Kindle. Though this kind of application is not new for other gadgets like the iPhone and smartphone, it is the first poker game for the Kindle. If like Texas Hold'em Poker, regardles whether you are a beginner or a pro, this is a no brainer buy, as it will give you many hours of fun and a nice variation (in addition to reading books/magazine/articles/web and playing scrabble/word-games).

You can play solo in the career mode, playing tournament (up to 5 player in a table) or head to head, against the AI. The AI is pretty good in my opinion (at least I haven't find a pattern yet on what the AI will do). And unlike some other single player poker game where we sometime feel the AI knows our cards and keep calling us whenever we bluff, this game will let us bluff successfully once in a while.

You can also play multiplayer mode/with your friends (but not online or with multiple Kindle) with the Pass 'N Play mode where you make your move, and then pass it to the next player to make their move (no, they won't see your cards), and so on so forth. While I find this Pass 'N Play mode not optimal (as you can just use a real deck of card to play), during travel or in places where using real decks of card is not very convenient (train, airport, plane, etc), I can see why someone might be able to utilize the Pass 'N Play mode.

A few things that can improve this game in a big way:
1. Allow multi player mode with multiple Kindle/one kindle per player (so no need to Pass 'N Play)
2. Allow to play with real people online (through 3G or Wifi)

3.0 out of 5 stars Harder than most Hold'em games February 26, 2011
Verified Purchase
I like to play Texas Hold'em at Casinos. I play both in cash games and local tournaments. I have found that a lot of the electronic games are pretty easy to beat. Not this game. Now I admit I'm a better cash player than tourney player, tournaments take longer and get boring, but I found the other players in this game to be a lot harder to bluff, and less inclined to the strange antics of lesser games. It is definitely good for teaching patience, which is the #1 skill for a hold'em tourney. Plus it plays well on the Kindle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another great EA game November 15, 2010

I've played Texas Hold'Em for many years for fun both online and in the flesh with real people, and now it's available for the Kindle I bought this game without hesitation. It's exactly what I hoped for, plays a fair game, (although sometimes the computer players will raise big, re-raise big bets against them and then fold against a tiny bet), the interface is great - clear and uncluttered, and is above all - FUN!

There's a career mode, one off tournaments in practice mode, and a nice play and pass mode so you can play with real people and pass the Kindle around without them able to see other opponents cards.

All in all, for the price of a small sandwich, this offers great value for money and is a wonderful addition to my Kindle for when I'm not in the mood for reading but want an entertaining diversion. It'll no doubt provide me with enjoyment for a very long time.

(Please can I second the request for a Chess game next? I would buy that immediately, I absolutely love Chess.)
