I am not one to read a nutrition book, but after seeing the doctor talk about the book on Rachael Ray, I decided to give it a try. I HIGHLY recommend this book, if you're not one that gets into all the scientific data and jargon that tends to fill so many of the nutrition books; If you want a book that just gets to the basic points of healthy eating that you might not know, and gives you a concise, quick summary of how to achieve healthy eating goals, then this is THE BOOK! I couldn't believe how informative it was without all the extra junk that nobody understands or pays attention to. This is practical life application information on how to eat better. With simple food lists summarizing whats at the top of the list in terms of the healthiest choices to make and it's all the stuff you really need to pay attention to at the grocery store and everyday stuff. This book was very motivational and encouraging to get me and my family started on healthier eating choices. And I understand better the WHY's of many topics such as carbs/whole grains/proteins/etc. that I just thought I knew before. This book is just simply good for you.

Oh, I'm an expert on this...I've read every new diet book to come out for many years. If reading could fix weight problems, I'd be Aphrodite, LOL. But, this book contains all the info I need to have plenty to eat while coming to my ideal weight and prolonging my life. The reason I gave four instead of five stars is that a page suggesting food amounts for a single day would have been helpful. I understand that Dr.Smith wanted to avoid prescribing any kind of regimented meals, but, it was hard to imagine exactly how much would constitute a full day, including snacks. He did offer wonderful portion-size images, actual photographs, to help people see how much IS an actual portion of food. Most restaurant plates come with about 3 times as much food as anyone needs to eat at a meal in order to feel satiated. But, I have just tossed all my old "diet" books, the ideas in "Eat" are exactly what I need to end my yo-yo syndrome. I knew much of this cutting-edge food info, but it was very useful to see it all in one source.

I particularily enjoyed this book as it was straight and to the point, not a lot of wasted words trying to get me to understand what I already know: I need to eat healthy and it would be nice to lose 20 pounds while I'm at it. I appreciated the "quick find" tables, and I appreciated the support from his peers (i.e., this is not a book of opinions by the author to manipulate our minds) and most of all, the proper servings sizes demonstrating how far off track many of us have unknowingly gotten. Great read, great reference to keep on hand.

I though this book is great. I plan to use it to plan the type of produce that I am going to purchase. I would also like to add this is not a boring factoid book, I actually could not wait to get to the next page. If you want to change your diet start with this easy read and get out your highlighter and flag your pages.

I'm one of those people who struggle to manage their weight, but I am not able to stick to fad diet plans, no matter what kind of claims are made about how easy they are to make into lifestyle changes. I have read several books about different methods to lose weight and I would follow them for a couple of weeks, but never see them through to the end (the end being my goal weight).

Over the last few years, I've come to the conclusion that I need to focus more on being healthy than reaching that certain weight. In order to be a healthy weight, I need to eat healthier and get more exercise. I have also come to the conclusion that, for me, cutting out the foods that I love most is not going to get me to where I want to be.

I just finished this book yesterday and it reaffirms what I believe to be healthiest track for me. I don't think this is a "diet" book in the same sense that you would read about the Adkin's Diet or the South Beach Diet. My impression is that this is a book to help you eat and be healthier for the rest of your life, not just to reach a goal weight. There are no diet plans to follow, no exercise regiments and no recipes - just quite a bit of basic information and suggestions for how to live a healthier life by way of eating right. The author uses information from things like the Food Pyramid and other readily-available sources to highlight that people need to eat a sensible amount of all food groups and allow themselves to indulge every once in a while on things that may not be as healthy but that they enjoy. The author emphasizes portion control and shows how to read food labels so that people can better understand what they are eating. There is part of a chapter that actually lists comparisons with everyday items for measuring foods (i.e.

Concise, informative. well-considered/researched guide to what to eat daily for health, feeling good, and longevity. The author essentially said he aimed to create this book as such; and, in my opinion as a reader of many Md, Rd, and smililar books, he did it. This book is well-organized
and after presenting what to eat daily to nourish out bodies contains near its end useful sections on how to modify the diet for specific needs such as weight loss, muscle building, and the like. There is a good section on 5 important spices to use daily: garlic, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne/capsaicin complete with what science has proved or suggested about each one and how best to use and prepare these. There are some refinements of his information that other writers might suggest, but as no one person can be expected to know every single thing about dietary recommendations, I still give this author 5 stars. He correctly assesses that Americans are tired of confusing information from people with agendas to sell and simply want to know what it is best and safest to eat as proven by science or enough folklore to trust perhaps until science comes around. He get credit for making the effort to answer to audience needs with reasonably sound, practical advice. Bravo!
