Over the last few years, I've come to the conclusion that I need to focus more on being healthy than reaching that certain weight. In order to be a healthy weight, I need to eat healthier and get more exercise. I have also come to the conclusion that, for me, cutting out the foods that I love most is not going to get me to where I want to be.
I just finished this book yesterday and it reaffirms what I believe to be healthiest track for me. I don't think this is a "diet" book in the same sense that you would read about the Adkin's Diet or the South Beach Diet. My impression is that this is a book to help you eat and be healthier for the rest of your life, not just to reach a goal weight. There are no diet plans to follow, no exercise regiments and no recipes - just quite a bit of basic information and suggestions for how to live a healthier life by way of eating right. The author uses information from things like the Food Pyramid and other readily-available sources to highlight that people need to eat a sensible amount of all food groups and allow themselves to indulge every once in a while on things that may not be as healthy but that they enjoy. The author emphasizes portion control and shows how to read food labels so that people can better understand what they are eating. and after presenting what to eat daily to nourish out bodies contains near its end useful sections on how to modify the diet for specific needs such as weight loss, muscle building, and the like. There is a good section on 5 important spices to use daily: garlic, ginger, cinnamon, turmeric, and cayenne/capsaicin complete with what science has proved or suggested about each one and how best to use and prepare these. There are some refinements of his information that other writers might suggest, but as no one person can be expected to know every single thing about dietary recommendations, I still give this author 5 stars. He correctly assesses that Americans are tired of confusing information from people with agendas to sell and simply want to know what it is best and safest to eat as proven by science or enough folklore to trust perhaps until science comes around. He get credit for making the effort to answer to audience needs with reasonably sound, practical advice. Bravo!
