This volume could have so easily been 5 stars. Instead, Dark Horse went with colorist Carlos Badilla, and another EC volume has been ruined.

For anyone who doesn't know, the EC Archives series has had a very topsy-turvy history. The first 10 or so volumes were published by Gemstone and colored by a digital coloring service called Jamison Services. There were criticisms early on that the colors were noticeably modern, but for the most part, things were in line thematically with the EC Comics of old. I personally thought they were beautiful.

After some financial problems at Gemstone, Dark Horse took over the line. Awesome news, except for one thing - their in-house colorist, Carlos Badilla. Whatever your problems were with Jamison, they pale in comparison to the garish photoshopping style Badilla brought to the books. Rather than try to describe the problems in words, here's a full rundown with comparison pictures on what I'm talking about:

This went on for several volumes, and the complaints were widespread. Finally, Dark Horse apparently relented a few months ago and returned to Jamison for their most recent volume, Two-Fisted Tales Vol. 3 - and the response from fans was overwhelmingly positive. Gone were the photoshopped fades and blurs and noticeable additions, and things finally felt true to the EC style. It seemed as though the series had returned to good hands.

Sadly, it was not to last. Dark Horse has gone back yet again to Carlos Badilla, and the results are predictably disappointing.

The good news is that someone clearly got a hold of Badilla and told him to tone it all significantly down.

These stories are essential. I think the debate about the coloring is interesting and that Dark Horse can be doing better if they listen to the critique. It's possible to make modern coloring look good on this material but it requires a light touch. Dark coloring could detract from some of these old issues when it was employed back then too. But DH's colorist likes to use colors to affect shadowing on this material where the inking is already indicating a shadow effect. I've noticed that certain artists suffer more than others from this coloring artist's method. Graham Ingles looks so much better in b&w or with older coloring. Johnny Craig would look crisp and perfect even if my five year old daughter colored it in with crayons but he's a god. I'm grateful to DH that they've taken over this project and we can expect to see the entire new trend books hard bound in color but I'd be lying if I said this was a perfect package. I buy all EC related material and I hope DH makes money and keeps releasing these either way but I'd dance a jig if they'd lighten up on the the coloring.

These books are fantastic! The older Gemstones are decent but pale compared to these - and yes, I hesitated to embrace the digital age after diggin' analog, but sometimes ya just gotta move with the times. I love the brilliance of the Mr. Badilla's coloring despite some criticism, the pages pop for me despite knowing of how the originals looked. I owned almost 60 originals at one time. Bottom line: Thank You Dark Horse and Carlos Badilla for your great effort to bring these great works back in style! And the covers are impeccable! Great job!
