Me: I expected the panels to output 13 watts, which is about 2.5A at 5V. The highest I got was 1.3A which is about half. Is mine defective?.
ECEEN: Hi JWLV, You're a prfessional buyer. Our solar panel is 13W/6V, so the solar panel output is 2.1A(Max), And there have voltage regulator, which keep the output voltage on 5V and automatic compatible and work for the difference charging device. And consider the weather conditions, So the USB output will be lower than the theory.
Me: The conditions were full Las Vegas sunlight, no clouds, 2100ft elevation (above smog and any overcast), at 1PM in early July. With sunrise at 5:40AM and sunset at 7:48PM, midday would be right at 1PM when the sun is almost directly overhead. The panels were set flat on the ground so it could receive the most direct sunlight possible. I can't imagine any better conditions than this to test the solar panels.
ECEEN: Hi JWLV, I fully believe your test result and I believe the test result from you is 100% correct. I am sorry that my last information is not helpful for you. Our solar panel specification is 13W/6V, and after voltage regulater circuit(USB output side), the voltage is 5V;
the voltage regulator circuit efficiency is 70-92% base on difference device. The theory output current on USB output side is from 1.5A to 2A(Calculate Formula should be: 13W/6V*Regulator Efficiency), and we need consider the Resistance of connecting cables and your testing device lost etc. so we believe your result 1.3A is correct. During our testing process, we use the 42,000Lum testing lights, and use the BEICH brand DC Electronic Load for testing, the testing result above 1.6A is passed. Thanks for your understanding. I am satisfied with ECEEN's technical explanation. It's quite obvious that they have far better testing equipment than what I have. And given the efficiency of the voltage regulator circuit which they state is 70-92% (there's no possible way for me to know this, and it's probably closer to 70%) and my own testing conditions (which is not in a controlled environment, but rather just in practical use), getting about half of the rated wattage seems to be reasonable.
Customer service is responsive.
The solar panels are flexible.
Entire unit weighs only about 1 pound.
Performance is a bit lower than expected. But at this price point, it is acceptable.
The back stand is almost useless. It is at a fixed angle and not adjustable. Any slight wind would topple it over.
The charging ports are at an inconvenient position. It would be better to have it near the edge of the unit so that I don't have to move the panels to plug in or unplug something.
Update - Customer service contacted me and suggested I use a battery to hold charge, then use that stored charge later. They shipped me the battery and I have not yet had enough sun while at home to give it a try.
