Framed and Frameless Windows
You might be reading about the WINBOT and think this may not work with the glass surface I have at home. That’s where you are incorrect. The W950 works with framed and frameless windows, sliding glass doors, shower stalls, and more. So, don’t think it won’t work with what you have at home, because it most likely will.
Before buying those ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones, stop! You won’t need them with this WINBOT. At just 62db, the W950 is quiet, allowing you to chat with your friends or watch TV while your windows are being cleaned.
Knows Not to go Over the Edge
If you know about our DEEBOT Robotic Vacuum Cleaners, you know they are equipped with a stair safety technology that doesn’t allow it to fall off stairs. We thought since that works so well, why not bring that technology and put it in the WINBOT? Now the WINBOT has the Edge Detection technology where it avoids going past the edge of your windows.
Reaches New Heights
Ever wish you were 7ft tall with the wingspan of a NBA basketball player? We do too, but since most of us aren’t that tall, WINBOT can help. With a 16ft extension cord, it will let you get places you could only reach if you are on a ladder, or if you are Shaquille O’Neal.
The Window Cleaning Robot. Innovation and advanced technology come standard, to quickly deliver spotless windows with the touch of a button. The high-tech suction fan and 4-Stage cleaning system quietly cleans all sorts of glass surfaces. I contacted Ecovacs before buying the W950 to make sure the robot would clean the double pane windows without breaking them and they assured me that it would, and that they rarely have a problem with window breakage and if it does happen, they'd pay for the window replacement. I went ahead and bought the 950 and couldn't be happier with it.
This is perfect if you have big windows, like a lot of modern houses do. it needs some monitoring, as you cannot just leave the robot by itself - once it finishes cleaning one window, it beeps, you have to pick it up and place it on the next window. There is some learning curve as to the amount of cleaner to put on the pad - too much and it leaves streaks, too little and it doesn't clean as well. I try to use it every three weeks, when the sun is not shining directly on the windows. I time it so I can be outside doing some garden chores. Place it on a window, go do a garden chore, hear the beep, come back to it, place it on another window, go gardening, hear beep, come back.
One thing to take note - when the robot finishes cleaning the window it stops and beeps for you to pick it up. It leaves a mark on that place where it stopped. This is no big deal - I just either use a microfiber cloth (it actually comes with one) or a paper towel to clean that one last spot. Nothing is perfect in life, not even the Winbot W950. Just deal with it ;-)
I love it - I would be spending much more than what it costs to have someone come clean my windows.
The unit arrived quickly and was easy to put together. I quickly realized that the safety tether was mostly pointless for me - it wouldn't keep the bot from plummeting down to the ground because we were on the first floor and our windows are floor to ceiling. So I wound up not using the tether.
The bot stuck firmly onto our glass and started its little routine as soon as I hit the run button. It cruised around and did a decent job of navigating the first window.
Unfortunately, the performance quickly started to get worse. It appears the unit isn't really engineered to get dirty despite being a machine to clean dirty things. Cleaning a 6'x8' single pane window tends to get its squeegee dirty and the unit will start to streak. The corner rollers quickly stopped rolling and started snagging the machine on things. After half a dozen windows, the unit also started getting confused - it would drift in arks across windows and sometimes jam itself at a 45 degree angle into a corner. Usually resetting the unit, removing it from the glass, and reattaching it in the middle of the window tended to solve for this.
Pros: Straightforward to use. Once you figure out how much cleaning solution to use and how often to swap out the cleaning pads, it does a nice job of maintaining clean windows. Its not for cruddy or grimy windows - its for windows that were clean 60-90 days ago and have a slight fog on them. The remote is convenient to have, though very confusing to use (my machine seems to take directions of 'up' 'down' etc as relative rather than absolute directions - sometimes pressing up sends it up, sometimes it sends it sideways)
Cons: Pads get cruddy fast, leading to streaking. Corner rollers tends to bind up and stick. Machine has a hard time traveling in a line parallel to the ground for any length of time without drifting. Tone letting you know the machine is done is rather loud and keeps going continuously, which can be annoying.
Clean off your cleaning pad with a microfiber cloth after you finish a window. If it starts to show signs of dirt, rinse it off and swap for a dry one.
Make sure where you place the unit to start a window is dry and relatively dust free. Dust will foul the treads and lead to a unit wobbling all over the place.
I used invisible glass cleaner in a spray bottle and just sprayed a good bit on the pad - moist not soaked. That seemed to work great.
Don't start the unit right next to the windows edge. It gets confused. Start somewhere in the middle.
Make sure the corner of your cleaning pad doesn't stick out beyond the edge of the unit and sensor. That corner will snag on things.
Check your corner rollers to make sure they roll. If they are frozen, rotate them with your finger to see if they can start to rotate freely. When they are stuck the unit has a difficult time at corners and edges.
Not sure if I will keep it. It did a nice job on the windows it did, as long as pads were new and proper solution was applied and squeegee was clean. But if the performance continues to decline, I think I will wait another year for them to get the bugs out before spending the money.
1) The robot has a backup battery inside of it to make sure it doesn't fall if you have a blackout at your house or building. Good idea. However, the robot will not run if the backup battery isn't charged. The manual doesn't make this entirely clear. If the robot won't give you the green "go" light, and instead gives you a blue light, then you need to leave it plugged in for a bit to charge the backup battery.
2) You need to have random cables looping all over the place to use the robot. There is a safety cable that needs to be anchored inside the window, even if the robot is working outside. Additionally, the unit needs to be attached to a power source at all times, and that requires you to run a cable to a power outlet. You need to make sure the cables provide enough slack for the robot to run the length and height of the entire window.
Ultimately, this is a great tool for office buildings with lots of tall and/or wide windows. It doesn't seem meant for individual houses, and as the price is too high and it doesn't seem like it's worth the time and effort for smaller house windows.
