On the plus side, the battery is plenty powerful enough. I mow for about 20-30 minutes and don't come close to using up a charge. There is also an upside to the lack of suction: it doesn't throw up as much debris so the bottom of my pants aren't all dirty after mowing.
The main advantages for me are not having to mess with fuel, having a much quieter mower that doesn't expel smelly exhaust, and that it folds up compactly for storage.
When these units were introduced to the market, I was intrigued, so started doing massive research on them. I first bought the original Lawn Mower with the 4 amp hour battery, and was quite disappointed in its performance. While I don't have a huge yard, it is within the size they advertised at the time for the unit. I was able to cut on 3/4ths of my yard before the battery died, then waiting 30 min to finish really sucked, so it went back. So IMO the battery tech for the mower at the time wasn't long enough to make the move from gas.
However in Feb. 2018 I purchased the new 7.5 Ah 1000W Mower with self propel and have waited until now and several uses before posting this review.
Out of the Box:
The unit I ordered came with the Super Charger and a 7.5Ah Battery, discharge bag, Mulching insert, and side discharge chute.
Long run time
Fast Motor turn speed to do normal cutting with auto power increase when higher load is detected
One hand deck height adjustment
Multiple handle adjustments
Self propel when unit is off
Easy clean up and storage
Run time - Again, my yard isn't all that big, and while I'm able to do the entire yard with the new 7.5Ah battery with about 35% (I'm guessing) left on the charge, and my usage is normal cutting with auto power up when a larger load is detected and the use of the self propel during awkward starts and small grade inclines. Any yard that is slightly larger than my yard would require a second battery to complete. IMO
As with all EGO 56V batteries, the charging station comes with a built in cooling fan, and the battery charges within 45 minutes. The charge time depends on how low you have depleted the battery during use. The push button on the battery to find out the state of the battery is nice, but really is only useful to tell you that the battery is getting low when the light indicator changes to red.
Other than some minor spray washing with a hose or broom and battery charging, this baby requires none.
As stated above in the Cons section, I'm able to do the entire yard with the new 7.5Ah battery with about 35% lefft on the charge, and my usage is normal cutting with auto power up when a larger load is detected and the use of the self propel during awkward starts and small grade inclines. This last cut (4/10/18) no heavy load detection was needed and I used the self propel more than before. Upon charging the battery, it quickly was able to charge up within 30 minutes since i only discharged it to (I'm guessing 35 to 40%).
Found out about the offline self propel mode by accident. I was pulling the unit and my hand must have grabbed the self propel handle and the unit started to "jump" because the back wheels were trying to move forward, but since I was pulling backwards it cause this action to happen. I then realized that the self propel worked when the cutting motor was off which is pretty handy to have, assuming you have enough battery life in the battery after your cut to engage this feature. I'm sure this is in the manual, but honestly I didn't look.
Accurate Charge level display on the mower and charger with LCD or LED display. I really hate guessing how much battery life is still in a battery. Green/Yellow/Red IMO isn't a good way to measure how much charge you have and whether or not to us the accessories during operation so you can complete the task at hand.
360 degree turn front wheels. This seems like a no brainer, but for some reason EGO hasn't done it yet, and I called them prior to buying asking this very question and they have no immediate plans to add it.
This product works as advertised, and if you are looking to get away from gas operated lawn mowers that might or might not start when you need it, then this is a good unit to choose.
Damn Good Buy!
