I was looking through my previous reviews and saw that a lot of people found this review helpful, so I thought I'd give an update two years later.
My wife and I still have had no problem with this mower. It continues to work perfectly well, the battery seems to be holding its charge well, and it's still a pleasure to use. My experience with this mower - as alluded to in the original review - led us to buy a couple of other EGO products which have also been outstanding. I'm now an electric lawn tool convert!
This is still a 5-star product two years later. Not having to deal with gas, oil, etc. is awesome with no significant compromises for our case. Strongly recommended!
I will freely admit that I was a bit skeptical of having an electric mower. I liked the idea of not having to deal with gas and the necessary mess and smells that come along with it, but I was worried that an electric mower would never have the same power as a gas-powered mower and thought I would have to spend more time waiting for the battery to charge than actually doing lawn work. The EGO immediately did away with those assumptions after the first mow.
Those that have described the EGO as the "Tesla of mowers" are absolutely right. This thing screams "premium" and "well-engineered" along every inch of its design. It's built with quality materials yet significantly lighter than a gas-powered mower thanks to the electric mower. It quickly and easily converts from its fold away storage mode to ready-to-use in a few seconds with minimal work. The battery charges INSANELY fast: from no charge on delivery to a full charge took only about 30 minutes, and I was easily able to mow my front and back yards on a single charge (roughly 25-30 minutes of mowing) with plenty of room to spare. The mower puts out plenty of power and had absolutely no trouble with my overgrown lawn. Adjusting the height of the blade was by far the easiest I've ever seen on a mower: the mechanism works almost exactly like a manual transmission on a car and is extremely easy to adjust. Finally, no more adjusting wheel by wheel painfully trying to move levers to the correct position. The only "complaint," if you can call it that, is that the battery charger is quite loud. There's a fan that turns on while the battery is charging to prevent it from overheating. It's not the kind of thing you're likely to hear in the garage, but when indoors - since I couldn't wait to give this thing a whirl as soon as I got it - it's pretty noticeable.
Time will tell how long this honeymoon period lasts. My main concern at this point is the longevity of the battery. At $200 a pop, it's not a cheap part to replace and batteries will, inevitably, lose their charge. After a couple of trips through the yard though, I couldn't be happier with this mower. I'm a new EGO fan and will absolutely be getting more of their equipment. I can't recommend this mower enough.
I love the mower, i love the ease of use. I have the trimmer and the weed eater as well and they rock. The tools are great! Everything is light, and really powerful for being battery operated.
I hate their customer service. They will never answer the phone, won't call you back, and if you open a case on the website they close without a response. I have a broken 4.0Ah battery after only a few months and they refuse to answer the phone. This company is a gamble. Just hope you don't have a battery problem or any problem for that matter, because their customer service does not exist. I can't believe after they closed the case, they actually had the nerve to attach a "survey". I haven't even been able to speak to any people with the company.
Attached one picture for the amount of time i spent today on hold, with no one answering. This is the third time.
I let my lawn go 3 weeks this spring, and it took two rounds to finish my 1/3 of an acre. I was impressed it only bogged out in the same dense wet grass where my gas mower would. With regular mowing, I have no doubt I will get it done on one charge.
As you can see in the pictures, the grass was long, dense and wet.
Now - the review. I have been using this for a couple weeks now and think it is simply awesome. It is, indeed, larger than I thought. But it is not heavy. It is very easy to slide down the handle, flip the handle over and store it in the garage standing end up.
Does a great job on the lawn. GREAT low noise - I can actually hear my podcasts in my earbuds. Fun to use.
Liked it so much the first time I used it that I mowed my neighbor's lawn as well.
I do not have a "huge" yard. I can do all front and back on one charge. And the battery charges very quickly. I want to say like 20 minutes or so?
Best mistake amazon buy I have ever made.
Oh - one note on delivery. This will not come packaged or wrapped or anything like that at all. It comes shipped in the original box with an address sticker attached. So - if you are uncomfortable having a $500 big box of something sitting on your porch waiting for you to get home from work you might want to think about being home or having somebody looking out for it.
