3.0 out of 5 stars Just okay, but sub output has high distortion.
By ZEric on December 6, 2015
I didn't know what to expect as I see a lot of mixed reviews on these cheap small amps so YMMV. Out of the box, the sub channel would only work for a few seconds before shutting down. Upon internal inspection, I found that the amplifier chip for the sub was not making any contact with the case, which is used as a heat sink, so the chip was quickly overheating. This was an easy fix so I just took care of it. FYI - the board uses all through hole components, except for the two amplifier chips, and looked like something manufactured in the 80's. The soldering is just okay, most components looked wave soldered except for the amp chips which were definitely hand soldered. Now working, I tested it using a 12v 5A power supply driven from my PC. The specs call for only a 2A supply which very likely would be insufficient for this amp, no power supply is provided.

The subwoofer output, although now functional, has a high amount of of distortion. Even at the very lowest sub volume, the sub seemed over driven and there was nothing I could do to prevent substantial distortion. There was also some distortion in the front speakers, but much less and they were at least listenable.

The treble/bass/volume controls only affect the stereo channels, they have no bearing on the sub output. The sub volume is the only control for it, there is no way to adjust the low pass crossover cutoff frequency. I would guess the low pass filter is set fairly high, maybe 150-200 hz, but I didn't measure it. The bass and treble are only additive, so you can raise the base or treble from flat, but you can't lower them. There is no way to bypass the tone controls entirely like there is on some of amps of this class. The controls moved smoothly and there was no popping or noise when adjusting. Volume wise, it is certainly loud enough for a bedroom or background music in a larger room or backyard. I wouldn't even consider using the sub output though.

The control knobs and speaker connections are a little cheap feeling, but that's expected for the low cost. The all aluminum case seemed fairly solid. The size is 5.5"x5"x1.5", including the knobs and connectors. It weighs just under 10oz. No instructions are provided, but for most people it setup will be fairly obvious.

I'll probably return it since the sub output doesn't work properly which was a feature I was looking for, but if all you need is a stereo amp to power speakers in your garage or backyard from your phone/tablet/mp3 player, then this might fit the bill. The price is right even for just a two channel amp.
