Great Wood Filler, but ....

I originally used this product to fill a lot of multi-sized woodpecker holes in my redwood siding. Some holes were minor surface blemishes. Some were major 3/4” deep canyons revealing the tar paper underneath. This wood filler filled all the holes without cracking. Sanded out and accepted an exterior solid stain or paint beautifully. Since dealing so well with woodpecker damage, I’ve successfully used Elmer’s wood filler in other wood filler situations. It’s a great wood filler. I gave it 4 stars because of the container. There is no way to securely close the manufacturer’s container after you open it. I suggest using your own plastic container with a snap-on lid to transfer the wood filler into after first use.

The product is good quality, but the 16 oz. container I received was literally half full (or half empty)! I just purchased the exact same product at ACE Hardware because I needed more and the container was nearly full to the top (I’d say about 7/8 full). Also, I paid $15.62 for 16 ounce container on Amazon and paid only $9.99 for exact same 16 ounce product at ACE Hardware a couple days later (and it was not on sale). Not pleased with this Amazon purchase.

Strong and sandable

I use this for exterior home repair where strength is important. For instance large areas of window frames where a corner will be exposed. This is the strongest filler I have found that has structural strength to it aside from epoxy fillers which are much more wxpensive. I don't ise bondo exterior because it expands not like wood but metal and fails in a few seasons. In contrast, this filler stays intact over the years and is strong enough to form an exposed edge. It takes. a few days to dry, so I use it where strength is needed and MH Ready Patch is too weak. Where strength is not needed, say filling small holes, Ready Patch is my goto since it dries faster. Now you have all the secrets to professional exterior repair; this product is a necessity for that.

This is the only filler I use (except of occasionally glue and sawdust), it drys fast, easily sands, water soluble for easy clean up. Takes stain fairly well, sometimes for touch ups I smooth it out with a damp rag before it drys and stain it while it is still damp. A little disappointed that a number of stores in my area like Home Depot don't carry it, so now I order it, to keep it in stock.

The Elmer's ProBond I received had a black lid, versus the orange lid seen here. Either way, it is a very good product for sealing cracks or even gouges in wood. I especially like this product because it has very little to no odor. It dries quick and hard so there is little wait time to get the job done quickly. It has a soft texture like peanut butter so it's easy to apply. Overall, I'm very satisfied and would recommend.
