With some effort this is a decent budget network camera

I picked this up because for the price it was the cheapest 720P network camera on the market. I wasn't sure if it would be a wasted effort or a pleasant surprise. This is probably more of a technical guide than a review, but I'm hoping this will help others who are looking at this camera.

I rated this four out of five because for the money you simply can't find a better camera with these specs. It's not perfect however and some technical skill is required to get things up and running. Once it's setup you are rewarded with a camera that competes with others costing twice as much.

To start with the bad news first:
Technical Gotchas

* Out of the box the camera listens on 192.168.1.10. DHCP is not enabled by default. This means you need a 192.168.1.X network for the initial setup.
* Default userID is admin with no password. This is noted in the manual.
* ONVIF support is non standard and none of the normal ONVIF tools such as the ONVIF Device Config tool support it.
* No out of the box Blue Iris support. Blue Iris will detect the RTSP stream, but will not correctly detect the needed path.
* The camera *requires* the included software for configuration.
* Odd lens size. Not sure of the size, but it's not the same as most of the other network cameras I've looked at. This could be an issue if you want to replace the lens.

Setup:
Unlike many network cameras you cannot set this one up with out the included software. There is an ActiveX control that must be installed and enabled for the initial setup. This was a problem for my purchase because the included mini-CD was blank. To their credit however the seller and manufacturer were excellent in their response. I sent an email to both and both replied within 24 hours with links to the software as well as a PDF copy of the manual. Without these this would be 1 start review.

The good news:
Technical Pluses

* True 720P with a wide angle lens
* Includes workable DVR software. I only used it long enough to see if it works, but the camera includes a Windows based DVR tool to manage camera alerts.
* Included setup software was easy to use once it was finally installed.
* Stable. Once the camera is setup it's very stable with no lines or visual oddities noted.
* Dual streams (720P and a CIF stream)

Blue Iris:
While the included DVR software was workable, I wanted to use this camera with Blue Iris. This requires some additional detective work because the Blue Iris camera setup tool will not correctly detect the camera's RTSP stream. To use the camera with Blue Iris , set the camera as a generic RTSP stream with a path of /user=<>&password=<>&channel=1&stream=0.sdp?real_stream--rtp-caching=100 . Change the stream=0.sdp to 1.sdp for the low resolution CIF stream. Change the <> to the user ID and password you setup with the camera.

Hopefully this will help someone else leverage these little cameras.

** EDIT ** I just found out that these cameras are now natively supported by both Synology NAS systems (as "Generic_ONVIF" with a port of 8899" )and recent versions of BlueIris (as "Empire ESC-IPC1" with a port of:34567). That should make these easier to setup and support.

Outstanding video feed, great image. BUT, I don't believe it's a 3.6 mm lens as advertised. (or at least mine isn't). I have a very narrow field of view. I think mine is a 6 mm lens, Can only see 10 feet wide at 10 feet away from camera. Also haven't figured out how to set / reset password. I've been able to change the IP address and get it set up & running with iSpy. I'm not comfortable with a "blank" password. Someone could easily hack into my computer through the open account password of this camera. (not cool). Because of the narrow field of view, and the difficulty / inability to change the password, I'm giving it a 4 star instead of 5.

Update: 12/22/2014
Since I was unhappy with the lens in this camera, I ordered a 1.8 and a 2.6 wide angle lens (from Amazon). A previous reviewer commented on the "odd size" of the lens. I am happy to report that it is a STANDARD 12MM X 0.5 MM thread lens. So any standard size lens you want to use as a replacement will work.

Update: 1/2/2015
I installed the 1.8 mm lens and found the housing would not allow the lens to screw in far enough to get a good focus. I then tested the 2.6 lens and it was able to screw in far enough to get a good clear wide angle focus. The 2.6 mm lens gave me the wide angle view I was looking for. (the lens was less than $4.00 from amazon). So for my needs, I got an outstanding network security camera for a total cost of around $30.00. For the price of this camera, don't be afraid to experiment with different sizes of lenses.

Update: 1/8/2015
I found an even better lens for this camera here on Amazon. (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00E1YYSD6/ref=pe_385040_128020140_TE_3p_dp_1). It's a 2.5 mm lens, but a much wider Field of View. Also the overall image clarity much better. Well worth checking it out.

Update: 3/16/15
I was so impressed with the 1st one I bought that I decided to start replacing all of my existing (& varied brands) security cameras with this little powerhouse! The only drawback I can think of it doesn't have audio record ability. This camera is a real winner! But as others have stated, the included software is crappy & buggy. Also you cannot change or add a password. But if you use iSpy (free, open source) security software, this camera works flawlessly!

The Bad:
1. Video stream is transmitted to a third party/remote website with no description of security and no privacy policy. This could be blocked if you change your network settings, I suppose, but then there would be no way to monitor remotely, because...
2. This camera appears to use a proprietary codec that mandates use of the supplied software for viewing.
3. This camera requires supplied software for configuration.
4. This camera requires Microsoft Windows (included software doesn't work on Linux or under WINE).
5. Camera gets hot.
6. I can't get it to record video (taking "snapshots" works, though).
7. Setup is less than intuitive, but another Amazon reviewer gave really helpful info.

The Good:
1. Inexpensive.
2. Decent picture quality, but with significant lag.

Overall:
Not bad for the price ($29.60), considering my intended use for it, i.e., live/occasional monitoring of entranceway. I've blocked any ability of this camera to communicate outside of my network, because the third party site should not be trusted.

Edit to add:
In case anyone wants to use VLC, need to add a user. In the config software, open the camera stream, right-click, Device config, Setting->Advanced, Account, Add User. Specify a username and password (to be used in the rtsp URL), and change group to "user." Click "OK."

Connect to the camera stream with VLC using the following URL (modify as needed, and replace "<>" with user and password):

rtsp://192.168.1.10/user=<>&password=<>&channel=1&stream=0.sdp?real_stream--rtp-caching=100
